Sept. 24— Horrific as it was, the attack, when it happened, did not take the residents of Haditha by surprise — at least that's what they claimed when the international press descended on the western Iraqi town.
Days after Mohammed Nayil al-Jurayfi — the self-proclaimed, unabashedly pro-American, new mayor of Haditha — was shot dead by unidentified gunmen, the townspeople declared they had seen it coming.

In the village of Thuluya earlier this year, a 28-year-old Iraqi man suspected of cooperating with U.S. troops was shot dead by his father and brother in the family back yard, according to a report in The Washington Post. In what appeared to be an honor killing, the family told the Post they had no other choice.
Honor crimes, or slayings undertaken to restore a family's perceived sense of lost honor, are an age-old practice in many parts of the Islamic world, but they are not exclusive to it.
