New Senate poll: Daschle 50 percent, Thune 45 percent
Posted on Sun, Sep. 26, 2004
Associated Press

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A new independent public opinion poll released Sunday shows Sen. Tom Daschle leading Republican challenger John Thune 50 percent to 45 percent.

The statewide poll was conducted Monday through Wednesday for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader and television station KELO, also of Sioux Falls. Eight-hundred likely voters were polled by telephone. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points in the poll, conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research Inc. of Washington.

"It's basically still a tossup. A lot of different polls show it to be within a few points. Both men know that. That's why the rhetoric is so heated," said Christopher Maynard, an assistant professor of history and political science at Dakota State University.

edit ...

The poll was conducted right after Thune and Daschle's tense exchange over the Iraq war on network television. Thune's unfavorable score in the polling jumped from 23 percent in May to 34 percent last week. Daschle's rose from 33 percent to 37 percent.

8. Daschle called Thune a "follower"
when Thune said he was looking forward to "working with the pResident."

2. Ohhh, I hope Daschel can keep that lead!
I'm not thrilled with Tom's performance as minority leader, but I sure don't want to loose that seat! I'm desperately hoping we can at least take control back in the Senate. Kerry needs at least one part of the legislature to be able to accomplish much of anything.

In the terrible circumstance that shrub wins, we absolutely need the Senate. This total control sh*t has to be stopped!!!!

3. terse is an understatement
Daschle almost made Thune cry.

I think Russert had enough terseness for a while, no chance of conflict between his guests today, Safire and Novak. :puke:

12. I'm convinced that the most petty and juvenile
people in the world are all grouped together in the House of Representatives and have (R)'s by their names. This bunch of morons are worse than local rightwing radio talkshow hosts.

7. Thanks for pointing it out! I think he's going to be fine.
God only knows what kind of changes go through a man's life who has been the target of an assassination attempt, made very publicly, by someone the government is in no hurry to locate and arrest. It damned well could diminish a little of his assertiveness for a while.

He's going to be o.k. again. I really like him. He's lightyears beyond a man like Thune. Far more decent.

11. I have to admit
I never really thought that much of Daschele but he did a good job standing up to Thune in that debate and making it clear why he would be a better senator. I don't think I've been giving him enough credit.

15. The Face of Fear: John Thune - Desperate attacks on Daschle
While I've been trying hard to take a positive pro-Kerry approach in my ads and flyers, I felt that the recent attacks by the Republicans essentially tying a Kerry victory to Al Queda attacks and the outrageous claim that Kerry's stance on Iraq "emboldens the enemy" cannot go unanswered. MSNBC and the New York Times have both highlighted these attacks in featured articles.

Here is my message (see http://bigpath.net/politics/Politics_of_Fear/PoliticsFearStart.html):

As the race for the White House and Congress tightens, the Republicans have reached a new low, subverting political debate and chipping away at every American’s right to free speech, fearful that they may indeed lose their tight grip on power.

Not only are the Republicans' statements false, they are a perversion of political discourse. Americans have fought and died defending the right of every citizen to speak freely. And that is the ultimate hypocrisy of the Republican comments concerning Iraq and the war on terror.

John Kerry and John Edwards offer courage, compassion and credibility. And they need a Democratic Congress to help them restore decency and honesty to our government.

We cannot afford four more years deception, censorship and fear. On November 2, the Choice is Clear.
