Is US buying up 'Terror Town'?
New York - The United States Department of Homeland Security is buying a tiny town in the western state of New Mexico to turn it into a lab for terrorism response training, The New York Times reported Sunday.

A small New Mexico engineering school will buy Playas, population 50, from a mining company with $5-million provided by Washington, the report said.

The town, located in empty desert plains just north of the Mexican border, was built by a mining company in the 1970s and had a peak population of 1 000 before the copper smelter was shut down.

Though now practically deserted, it "has all the characteristics of a contemporary American community: the churches, the bank, the health clinic, even the baseball diamonds," said Van Romero, vice president for research at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

2. I remember this
I remember reading about this early last year. It was around the same time that the new "Northern Command," for military operations within the United States, was announced. At the time I figured "terrorism response training" was a euphemism for "domestic civil control."

6. They will also train "Labor Dispute Contractors" (read Strike Breakers)
They will use this place to train their Goons and Thugs, who will soon be exployed "TO END LABOR DISPUTES"

In the fine art of smashing faces and breaking arms.

4. As I recall, too...
... the sale of the property to any private or commercial entity would have created a nightmare for the old and new property owners with regard to environmental clean-up due to mining operations in the area by the town's owners.

There was some sleight-of-hand by Domenici in arranging this sale to the state with federal monies to ensure that Phelps Dodge wouldn't have to clean it up prior to the sale, as I recall.

5. Some 185,101 tons
Some 185,101 tons of structural steel have been hauled away from Ground Zero.
Most of the steel has been recycled as per the city's decision to swiftly send the
wreckage to salvage yards in New Jersey. The city's hasty move has outraged many
victims' families who believe the steel should have been examined more thoroughly.
Last month, fire experts told Congress that about 80% of the steel was scrapped
without being examined because investigators did not have the authority to preserve
the wreckage.

8. been there many times
Ive been to Playas many times---this town was a nice community at one time----nice homes which are still standing, trees, commissary, parks streets etc----it was a self contained small town with probably two hundred or so homes----I thougth it would have made a great retirement community or a goverment retirement community---for vets or something such-----instead now they want to shoot the place up and reduce it to rubble---typical bush goverment tactics---why make something decent when you can reduce it to rubble----
