Kennedy: Bush Makes U.S. More Vulnerable
By LOLITA C. BALDOR, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration's failure to shut down al-Qaida and rebuild Iraq (news - web sites) have fueled the insurgency and made the United States more vulnerable to a nuclear attack by terrorists, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record) said Sunday.

In a speech prepared for delivery at George Washington University on Monday, Kennedy said that by shifting attention from Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) to Iraq, Bush has increased the danger of a "nuclear 9/11."

"The war in Iraq has made the mushroom cloud more likely, not less likely," he said in the remarks released late Sunday.

Expanding on earlier suggestions that Iraq is Bush's Vietnam, Kennedy said U.S. soldiers are bogged down in a quagmire with no end in sight.

More.... Rate it a 5!!!!

3. When fearmongering is the right tactic
One problem with unseating Bush--maybe *the* problem--is how scared he has made the public.

Given the degree of mass psychosis, it is worth attempting a kind of campaign judo rather than trying to argue on rational terms. That is, since the nation's spectacularly afraid, you use that fact to your advantage, just as the Bushies regularly do.

Seen in that light Kennedy is making a bold calculated move. A realist who has seen his ideology deserted by his own party and by a public dulled intellectually to a tar-pit torpor, Kennedy accurately reads the signs: Kerry is finished unless a powerful new meme can be unleashed in society.

Defeat, as will become clearer next week after the debates fail to move Kerry's poll numbers, lies just ahead. It's time for Kerry to go for broke, follow Kennedy's lead, and tell Americans that he is quite possibly their last and only hope. Forget the Hallmark sentiment of "hope is on the way": tell them hell is on the way unless they vote Bush out.
