Networks Objecting To Misuse Of Clips (Political Ads) - Columbus Dispatch
Political ad makers say news interviews considered fair game

<snip>

WASHINGTON — The television airwaves are public, but the TV networks are insisting that interviews broadcast on them are not.

Networks are objecting to political advertisements that contain clips of Sen. John Kerry or President Bush on news shows such as NBC’s Meet the Press or ABC’s Good Morning America.

Networks say the interviews are copyrighted and thus cannot be used without permission. That has prompted sponsors of some ads to discontinue running them.

Others have not canceled their spots, saying they fall under the "fair use" provision of copyright law, which permits use of clips for criticism, news reporting, teaching or research.

they're stealing the footage, they're talking about it. It is fair use just like talking about articles found at news sites.

Wonder if this thing favors a certain candidate...

Edit: Woops, I meant to put a 'not' in front of 'stealing'
