Franken chides Bush for Maine Democrats

CAPE ELIZABETH — Al Franken stood in the bed of a pickup truck Sunday, talking up Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry and castigating Republican President Bush. "George W. Bush has tried to make an issue of flip-flopping in this campaign," said Franken, the political satirist, best-selling author, radio host, media critic and comedian.

But speaking to about 500 people at the Cumberland County Democratic Committee's annual picnic at Fort Williams Park, Franken said it's Bush, not Kerry, who flip-flops.

He said the president changed his position on the Department of Homeland Security, on having an independent 9/11 Commission, on free trade.

1. I submitted the following comment in reply to the comments
made by obvious right-wing shills to the article:

It would seem that people like Matt from Wells disagree with celebrities having political views. Yet he says not a word about people like Arnold Schwarzenegger (whose political opinion seems to matter despite his celebrity status) or even that beloved actor of the right, Ronald Reagan who could never have entered politics at all if not for his name recognition granted by his history as an actor.

Will the words of a celebrity change my political opinion? Probably not. Do they have as much right as anyone else to voice their opinion? Most definitely. Will I listen to what they have to say? If it consists of fact (as Mr. Frankens statements did), I certainly will. Anyone who has paid attention during the past 4 yearss knows that Mr. Franken was making factual statements. Bush was against a department of Homeland Security before he was for it. He campaigned on a promise not to use our military for nation building, yet that's exactly what it's being used for. He was against a 9/11 investigative panel before he was for it. He was against appearing before that panel before he was for it. He wanted to invade Iraq for WMD, then for terrorists links, then when neither of thosse panned out, for liberation, and the list goes on.

2. Good one.
Most of the comments were. HOW SOON they forget Arnold, and Ronnie, and even Charlton Heston, and more. And who was it, mere weeks ago, who was parroting every line of republi-CON talking points up to and including the vague, vaporous reference to "UBL" instead of the full "Osama bin Laden," after speaking AT that convention (along with the aforementioned Arnold) while whining that there might be repercussions for his acting career - Ron Silver, hmmm?

Your comments are well-put, and they need to be said.

4. Thankfully, I think the world has forgotten Miller, his cable show
is the lowest rated one on cable (.1 share ). Wonder
if it affects his desire for political office that
the Orange County Repugs are prepping him for?
