Boy fatally shoots another on Marine base

CAMP PENDLETON – A 10-year-old boy shot and killed another 10-year-old boy with a hunting rifle yesterday morning, Marine Corps authorities said.

Officials are calling the shooting accidental, but said an investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the base's military police is continuing.

The 11 a.m. shooting involved two boys who came on base with adults yesterday to visit friends who are Marines living on base, said spokeswoman Capt. Juliet Chelkowski.

Chelkowski could not say where the boys got the rifle. Several adults who were in a house near the shooting site attempted first aid, Chelkowski said.

1. How sad

This happened to a childhood friend of mine. An adult left a loaded revolver out while going to the store. One child shot and killed my friend by accident.

Two lives destroyed. Being shot with a hunting rifle is almost always instantly fatal.

In NC there are laws against leaving firearms unsecured. They are rarely applied because the person who facilitated the accident is usually burdened with their actions in a way that nothing else can compare to.

My prayers are with their family, their suffering is unimaginable.
