University of Arizona Professor Reported to FBI for "Hating" America
After a series of ads in the University of Arizona newspaper railed against left-wing professors, a student allegedly reported Professor David Gibbs to the FBI for being "an anti-American communist who hates America."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A series of ads have been running in student newspapers across the country charging that universities are dominated by liberal or left-wing professors. The ads are paid for by well-funded groups like Students for Academic Freedom and the Independent Women's Forum. Some of the ads encourage students to report any so-called anti-American faculty or statements made by professors. And that is apparently what happened to David Gibbs, an Associate professor of History and Sociology at the University of Arizona. After his Spring course "What is Politics?", a student wrote the following on an anonymous evaluation form:
"I believe that the university should check into David Gibbs. He is an anti-American communist who hates America and is trying to brainwash young people into thinking America sucks. He needs to go and live in a Third World country to appreciate what he has here. Have him investigated by the FBI. FBI has been contacted."

David Gibbs is an associate professor of History and Sociology at the University of Arizona. He has an article in the journal New Political Science called "Pretexts and U.S. Foreign Policy: The War on Terrorism in Historical Perspective."

2. You know what's amazing...
The Cold War ended in 1989-1990, when the typical college student would have been around five years old. Yet some of these dinks still say thing like, "he's an anti-American communist."

The right sure has a hard time letting go of its enemies.

Of course, as it always has been Totalitarian Monsters when behaving as such ALWAYS believe themselves to be Heroes on a White Horse.

But of course, all this Bushevik Pig is doing is behaving exactly like the Communists he professes to revile!

"You have been denounced to the KGB. The KGB has been notified, traitor."

Just the beginning. I have known that icy feeling in my gut from 4 years ago, when it was painfully clear Free America was dying.

Now it is dead. Probably irrevocably.

Lynne Cheney's campus crusade
Second Lady’s ACTA launches campaign against 'Blame America First' academics

Have campus protests against the war on terrorism annoyed you? Has the handful of professors speaking out against the bombing of Afghanistan and raising questions about the roots of the crisis gotten on your nerves? They're bothering the heck out of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA), a Washington DC-based group dedicated to countering "political correctness," keeping its eye on campus "radicals," and changing the way universities throughout the country govern themselves.

ACTA, originally founded in 1995 as the National Alumni Forum by Lynne Cheney and Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman, recently published an incendiary report claiming that "colleges and university faculty have been the weak link in America's response to the attack" of September 11.

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, ACTA's report documents 117 incidents since September 11 that reflect "a shocking divide between academe and the public at large." And while the report titled "Defending Civilization: How Our Universities Are Failing America, and What Can Be Done About It," affirms the right of professors to academic freedom, at the same time maintains that this freedom does not make academics immune to criticism.

when they went to all the major Universities spewing their right wing rhetoric.

I'm not too enthralled over Lieberman. I've never heard of him trying to put a jacket on a College professor, or having a professor black balled from teaching.

of this country, lock, stock, barrel. Academia is liberal by its very nature, and the political view of most of those with the intellect and desire to participate in it. Conservatives have business, with all of its power. The Right has taken the Church, which used to be liberal, as was the man Christians profess to worship. The Right has our government, they have cowed our free press.

We are in a real crisis here.

46. Well Rove and Co. did that bit of research...
Where they found out that people that tend to go to University also tend to become more liberal. That's why Rove and his goons say things like there is such a thing as too much education.

Thus the brown shirts assault on Universities.

Universities are not liberal. Universities are places of higher learning. Where open mindedness, and different points of view are expected. When you lend yourself to that you become more tolerant and ask more questions. Such things a liberal makes.

As for this news article... My goodness... Gobbels would be proud.

18. evaluation forms are generally anonymous
I did a short stint as an adjunct prof. The head of the dept warned me in advance not to take the students evals to heart. She said EVERYBODY got a mix of good and bad. This was 6 years ago, so I don't think the conservative backlash had revved up yet. But I'll never forget one eval. She was drippingly sarcastic (I'm pretty sure I know which student it was). "She said "where DOES get its professors?"

(I also got "She ROCKS!" so that balanced it out.)

12. Guess who runs and funds that group???
http://www.cspc.org/ That is David Horowitz's group that is the owner of the Students for Academic Freedom website, and listed as Administrator for it.

The CSPC is featuring a big shindig down in Florida featuring such notables as: MICHELLE MALKIN! And our favorite whore amongst the Republicans: ZELL MILLER!!!

Gosh.. isn't it just SWEET how these college students have taken it upon themselves to fight for academic freedom??? I wish the voters would wake the fuck up and realize that our democracy is being run into the ground by fascists who want to control EVERY message to America. They cannot tolerate a different viewpoint, and will use the money of the Scaifes, and the Murdochs, and the corporations of the world to silence all but their voice. First it was media deregulation, then shadowy groups like those, then full out attacks via email and calls on those that speak out against them!!!

22. It's working very well for them
Edited on Mon Sep-27-04 11:54 AM by Cats Against Frist
I have a degree in Nonwestern Politics -- with substantial course work in American identity politics. So, I took ALL the courses that Republicans usually are referring to, when they rip on political science departments: Women in Politics; Race, Ethnicity & Inequality; Voting and Elections; Latin American Politics 1 & 2; Middle Eastern Politics; Asian Politics; Constitutional Law; Empirical Research Methods, etc.

What it comes down to, on this particular "blame America first" issue, is not a difference in SCHOLARSHIP, but sheer denial.

If you read about history from a number of sources, it is clear, like everything else, that you get "the spin," and from that -- you make your own conclusions.

We know, for instance, that the CIA helped overthrow Mossadegh in Iran, and installed the Shah. We also know the story about Allende, we also know that the U.S. supported Saddam Hussein, and any number of despots, throughout the 20th century. These are things that are not "made up," or spun. The spin comes from "why," -- "why did the U.S. do these things?"

The answer is the same, whether from the right or the left: The U.S. will do anything, or stop at nothing to protect its interest, no matter what affect this has on other nations.

It's just that the right won't own up to it in the public square. They can make vague comments, like Bush's quote in his convention speech, that was something like, "my opponents think that America brought the terrorist attacks on, itself," relying on the IGNORANT plebeians not to know the particulars of American foreign policy.

The Republican Party is "PC"-ing itself, hiding it's true motives, because it is an embarrasment to them. Finding excuses for their actions, without really coming right out and saying it: we are the superpower, we own this fucking world, and you won't fuck with us.

Now, several of their SUPPORTERS will say this (watch Washington Journal's call-in show), and from time to time, a right-wing talking head will blow the cover and say something on the air, like Newt Gingrich did, when pushed by Pat Buchanan on Meet the Press. When Newt had effectively run out of excuses, he said something like the following: "Well this area of the world controls of the world's oil, and we have to make sure that it's flowing, or that it's available to us."

Now your every-day-fascist-on-the-street will not hide this -- in fact, American superiority, xenophobia, racism and cultural supremacism are the true "kitchen table" issues of the GOP. It's not just money -- it's ideology, and the right wing is just sour that it has to hold court with a bunch of "uppity liberal intellectuals," who are the last bastion of people who will call them out on their bullshit.

But they won't take to the airwaves, and ever say what they really are. And the only people who usually find out "those particulars" that I mentioned above, are those who go to a college history or political science class and are given a much broader survey of what's happened in the world.

It's not some ranting, overly biased, nutjob of a left wing commie teacher that they want to stop: the want the "particulars," to be stopped -- the mention of Allende, Mossadegh, etc., etc., ALTOGETHER.

Why -- because in the end, when there's no one to question, their own shame will go away.

32. Yes wonderful post But you don't know what it is Do you, Mister Jones?

You walk into the room
With your pencil in your hand
You see somebody naked
And you say, "Who is that man?"
You try so hard
But you don't understand
Just what you'll say
When you get home

Because something is happening here
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?

You raise up your head
And you ask, "Is this where it is?"
And somebody points to you and says
"It's his"
And you say, "What's mine?"
And somebody else says, "Where what is?"
And you say, "Oh my God
Am I here all alone?"

Because something is happening here
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?

You hand in your ticket
And you go watch the geek
Who immediately walks up to you
When he hears you speak
And says, "How does it feel
To be such a freak?"
And you say, "Impossible"
As he hands you a bone

Because something is happening here
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?

You have many contacts
Among the lumberjacks
To get you facts
When someone attacks your imagination
But nobody has any respect
Anyway they already expect you
To just give a check
To tax-deductible charity organizations

You've been with the professors
And they've all liked your looks
With great lawyers you have
Discussed lepers and crooks
You've been through all of
F. Scott Fitzgerald's books
You're very well read
It's well known

Because something is happening here
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?

Well, the sword swallower, he comes up to you
And then he kneels
He crosses himself
And then he clicks his high heels
And without further notice
He asks you how it feels
And he says, "Here is your throat back
Thanks for the loan"

Because something is happening here
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?

Now you see this one-eyed midget
Shouting the word "NOW"
And you say, "For what reason?"
And he says, "How?"
And you say, "What does this mean?"
And he screams back, "You're a cow
Give me some milk
Or else go home"

Because something is happening here
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?

Well, you walk into the room
Like a camel and then you frown
You put your eyes in your pocket
And your nose on the ground
There ought to be a law
Against you comin' around
You should be made
To wear earphones

Because something is happening here
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?
- DYLAN

48. Yeah, that's the one
My other favorite was watching Richard Perle, on "Washington Journal" try to justify ten ways to Sunday the Iraq war -- you know spinning it away from the "war for oil," or "neocon/Israel" things, and the GOP callers kept calling up and going, "We have to go in thar and get that thar oil," and "We HAVE to protect Israel," -- over and over. And then someone finally calls in and calls him a neocon fascist or something, and he gets pissed off. It's one of my favorites.

I love that page o clips, BTW.

31. Great information -- this is exactly what we need to be doing
We need to track all these slippery right-wing groups and not let them get away with creating the illusion of expressing grassroots sentiments. If we could pin what is happening in this country on a few major personalities and start getting their names and agendas into every story like this one, we'd be a long way towards undoing the stranglehold the far right has on opinion in this country.

Here something from Media Transparency on the Independent Women's Forum:

http://www.mediatransparency.org/recipients/iwf.htm

The following facts about the IWF are from a May 1, 2001 Washington Post story about the IWF's growing political influence in the George W. Bush Administration.

* Nancy Mitchell Pfotenhauer is the new president. She is a protege of Wendy Lee Gramm, an "influential board member and wife of Sen. Phil Gramm (R-Tex.)." She also was the chief economist for the Republican National Committee, and worked as an economist in the first Bush Administration
* "The group was formed in 1992 by Republican women angered by the testimony of Anita Hill at confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas."
* Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao is on its national advisory board. Her husband Mitch McConnell is a Republican Senator from Kentucky
* Lynne Cheney is a former member of its board of directors. Her husband Dick Cheney is the Republican Vice President.

<snip>

Follow the amazing tale of how the conservative philanthropies subsidize interns free to journalistic institutions such as USA Today and The Weekly Standard. Two interns of the Collegiate Network -- itself an offshoot of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute -- wrote nearly identical stories parroting lines from the Independent Women's Forum's newspaper ads. One appeared in USA Today, the other in The Weekly Standard's online edition.

<snip>

What is the "Collegiate Network"? It is a place that supports "conservative campus journalists with money, free training seminars and technical assistance from mentors, including Heritage Foundation Fellow William Bennett..."

SACRED LAW

Our principle of Sacred Law is based on the mystery of the creature being, Crow. For us, Crow is a mystical creature who represents the principle operating behind illusion. We call the Great Mystery an illusion because we believe this Dreamtime we all live in is just that, a dream conjured up by Great Spirit behind which the true Reality exists unending.

Crow is the vehicle for this to happen

Saw something this in "It can't happen here". Memo to the professors at college threatening them with the camps if they spoke out against or criticized the government...

"an anti-American communist who hates America."

OK, so just WHAT exactly is that? and when did it become a crime worthy of being "turned in" to the FBI for being a "Communist"?

I didn't know the Communist Party was outlawed in the US like the Nazi party is in Germany...Did i miss something from the 70's when we used to have Communist candidates on the ballot?

This is Lynn Cheney and Jowelly Joe's work.

29. How very republican. This student is not some nut, he is a mainstream
republican. I tell every republican I know about stories like this and I tell them that every time they vote for a republican for any office they are empowering and supporting this kind of behavior.

33. The student hates the Constitution
Even if he did hate America, that is not a crime. Hating America is nonetheless legal.

34. conservatism..
conservatism is the dark black. The destroyer of Liberty and justice. Fear, greed, hatred and ignorance are the four horsemen of conservatism. Welcome the dark ages again friends unless these maniacs are repulsed.

37. I'm confused! Isn't freedom of opinion still legal in the US?
Didn't we fight a couple of wars to protect our freedom?

38. Only Three were for Freedom, If you look at history
Actually WWII was fought for the concept of freedom, and the Revolutionary War was fought to bring us freedom, and the War of 1812
was fought to preserve what had been fought for during the Revolution.

All the others after the Civil War were for US interests.

And freedom of opinion is great so long as you are willing to listen to another opinion without calling in the Gestapo when you don't like what you hear.

Besides if you're going to accuse someone of something at least have the courage to do it openly, not as anonymous.

40. Why is s/he even in college?
That's prime age for fighting the neocons' wars. Why isn't s/he in the Army/Air Force/Marines/Navy/Coast Guard out fighting those darn "commies"? Wonder if s/he will become one of those godless anti-American commies when the draft board comes for him/her?

This student is using the word "sucks" & "anti-American communist" in a formal complaint? Is this a JOKE?

Why is this being taken seriously? THis seems a bit out of hand, and reminds me of those child witnesses in the Salem witch trials...

Edited on Mon Sep-27-04 01:44 PM by Xipe Totec
The Young Pioneers in the Soviet Komsomol used to rat out their own parents and get medals for it.

These freepers want to defend our American values by acting like freaking commies.

No wonder they're in the RED states! I get it now.

51. Just more ignorant hate mail from another republican nazi wannabe.
RWers think anyone that is educated and intelligent is a leftist against America. When university professors present facts to RW buttheads, these ignorant little nazis think it is left wing propaganda.

This is because RWers do not want facts to be taught in schools. Facts are the opposite of everything RWers believe in.

2+2=4 is communist propaganda to a RWer.

63. "go live in a third world country..." and get shot by US-backed terrorists
The US gov't and CIA has been the biggest terrorist group on the planet for 60 years. That is the 'America' that "sucks."

This former CIA station chief blew the whistle on the CIA's secret wars in the third world that KILLED over 6 Million poor people.
From a speech back in October 1987 wherein he warns of the Reagan White House eliminating the Bill of Rights, pre-emptive wars, secret detentions, torture, executions, and FEMA concentration camps. All of this came to pass.

67. Why doesn't he go to a fine right wing university?
He could get a great non-threatening education at Jerry Fallwell's U, or Pat Robertson's U. I went to the universities I went to to learn modern biology and research skills. If he wants to learn crap, he should go to a university that specializes in it!

68. if you don't understand the mentality behind some of this...
their actions won't make any sense. Been down that road. This smells like the holier than thou attitude that is produced from truly believing one is "god's chosen" for a holy Pat Robertson-type mission. These people pervert faith and use hate to further their self-righteous positions in life. They believe we are headed for Armagedon and they are pushing it along faster and faster in their minds. They are no different then religious Muslim suicide bombers.

In the 70s, I got close to some of these types of people. They were basking in the Frances Shaeffer series' "How Then Shall We Live" that focused on the end times happening around now with the decline of morality in America likened to how Rome fell, leading up to the arising of a great Anti-Christ and Armagedon exploding into WWWIII bearing out of the Middle East. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. Yep, sounds like a fairy tale? Talk to survivors of Jim Jones. They believe. They think they can help destroy this world because they will be "raptured" and miss the final episodes of its demise.

That's the type of religious experience they are tapping into when they tell people in W. Virginia that Kerry is going to steal their bibles. None of this is what I believe Christ lived and died for.

Didn't I read about this in jr. high? The Weekly Reader had these scary stories about the Commies and how they brainwashed their kiddies so they'd turn in their parents and teachers for having wrong thoughts.

That wasn't supposed to be here, was it?

Guess not. Silly me.

71. To be fair...
I am going to withhold judgment on the situation pending an FBI response (or lack thereof).

If professors start getting denied tenure or cut from teaching classes because of this Brownshirt-like behavior (which could concievably happen), only then I will get upset.

Until then, I will just stick with my opinion that this student is a dickhead. I bet he got a C- for failing to master the course material, too.
