Houston CBS affiliate boots Rather show

By MICHAEL GRACZYK
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

HOUSTON -- Dan Rather's daily CBS radio broadcast is off the air where he grew up. Houston CBS radio affiliate KPRC hasn't been running it for the last couple weeks in reaction to his "60 Minutes" report questioning President Bush's National Guard service.

"I felt no anchor ... should ever be the story or bigger than the story," Ken Charles, program director of the news-talk station, said Monday. "I thought it was appropriate to take him off the air."

Rather last week apologized on behalf of CBS News because it could not authenticate documents used in the Sept. 8 story that suggested Bush got preferential treatment. The apology wasn't sufficient to put Rather back on KPRC in the nation's 11th-largest media market.

"For right now, I'm not convinced there's any reason to put him back on the radio station," said Charles, whose station lineup includes opinion-based talk shows of Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage. "Until CBS or somebody is able to do that, I feel like there's no place for Dan Rather on KPRC."

5. The Irony
Dan started at CBS (channel 11 in those days) back in the late 50's at that Houston station. Funny how they are trying to retire him now.

8. Nope, KPRC radio was NBC in those days.
It's since gone over to mostly right-wing talk.

Dan Rather was News Director at KHOU-TV (Channel 11) the CBS TV station. During Hurricane Carla, he was shown outside, reporting as the storm was blowing around him. I believe this was the first big hurricane with live TV coverage. Blame Dan for all the newscasters you see exposing themselves to the weather; they just want to be discovered! Shortly thereafter, Rather left Houston to join CBS Network News.

KHOU-TV is the best local network news. Polically pretty even-handed, with less emphasis on murder & scandal stories than some other local outlets. KPRC-TV, the NBC station, has an irritating Republican slant. I liked their weather guy & was glad when he left--so I was able to switch to KHOU with on regrets.

25. Remember that?
"What's the frequency, Kenneth?" Seems all too appropriate at this point in time--hurricanes blowing all around us, and guys named Ken scrambling the frequencies...

Did they stick out their collective tongues at him, touch their nose with their thumb, wiggle their fingers, and make the raspberry sound?

7. Rove is still "fucking him like he's never been fucked before" --
destroying Rather as he does all who stand up to the cabal. If this is the station where Rather got his start, it's an extra special little screw.

9. Suppose media issues continue down this path--where will US elections be?
in 2012, 2020, 2028.

If American media morphs into the Rovian version and this Houston affiliate's version of election coverage/manipulation of content, what does America look like for your children and grandchildren?

Scary?

If Bushco stays in power and completely reprograms the media, you can forget about any more elections.

10. KPRC Radio is a Clear Channel station with racist talk hosts ...
I've written to Ken Charles several times to complain, and quit listening altogether about a year ago -- when they put Michael Weiner on during drive-time, that was it.

In addition to Limbaugh and Savage and Glenn Beck, the local talkers are real disgusting pigs who laugh about minorities and disabled people ... just another Clear Channel evil radio station.

In my opinion, Dan wouldn't have wanted to be there anyway.

The CBS-TV affiliate is not related to this radio station.

19. Has this Houston Affiliate
stop showing Bush on TV because he used forged Niger docs to help get his war? I am sure they have. I mean if they no longer show Rather who forgery killed nobody then of course they booted Bush off their airwaves who's lies killed thousands, right?

27. It's a Radio Station--they never "showed" Rather.
KPRC radio was formerly NBC's outlet; now it's mostly right-wing talk radio.

KHOU-TV--the CBS TV outlet where Rather got his start--is still going strong. They have the best local news coverage.

24. If they're CBS, why do they say they're NBC????
<http://www.click2houston.com/contact/index.html >

What is your favorite type of show on KPRC, Channel 2?
News
NBC Sitcoms
NBC Dramas
Talk Shows
Other

Uh.........Maybe Tom Brokaw also agrees that there's no place for Dan Rather on KPRC? It IS an NBC affiliate, isn't it?

Or do they do CBS news and NBC programming? Kinda whatever the mood strikes?

So Houston people, whose station IS this?

28. The story is about KPRC Radio, not TV
KPRC Radio was formerly the NBC station--respected in my youth, although you listened to KILT for rock, KIKK for country & KCOH for R&B. (KCOH is the only station that's retained its format.)

KPRC Radio is now a Clear Channel all talk station--check it out: www.950kprc.com/main.html

KPRC TV remains the NBC outlet & KHOU TV (where Rather got his start) is still CBS. KHOU's news coverage is the best in Houston (in English) & KPRC shows its bias.

30. Yes. The show is called "Dan Rather Reporting"
KPRC carried that show, so their political talk would not be 100% wingnut; besides, Rather is a local boy. The station also carries CBS new, but it's not a real affiliate of CBS.

It's owned by Clear Channel.
