Top Bin Laden deputy Ayman al-Zawahri has been caught in Pakistan, according to a report from the region quoted on Israel Radio Monday.

Pakistani forces operating against al Qaida strongholds in the country report capturing the Egyptian national, who was formerly the head of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, which operated in the past against the Egyptian regime.

Earlier Monday, the US commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan Lieutenant-General David Barno told Reuters that there is little evidence of al Qaida fighters still in Afghanistan, and that Pakistan's crackdown on al Qaida-linked operatives has made life harder for fugitives hiding in tribal areas near the Afghan - Pakistani border

5. I count this as the fourth time his capture has been
announced by some offshore news source.

Honestly, it looks like a catch and release program in Pakistan!

7. Unless they want to overshadow the debate -- not give Kerry a chance...
to benefit by a good night, or Bush get tripped up by a mess-up.

9. Is this a different guy than the one they're blaming the Iraq stuff on?
Sorry...all these names I am so unfamiliar with are starting to sound very similar. I remember the one in Iraq they spell his name with a Q. Is this a spelling error, the same guy, or am I just nuts?

14. Smell test alert
This is huge, if true. Al-Zawahiri is (or was) Bin Laden's second in command.

I do recall the Pakistanis claiming they had him "cornered" a few months ago, and another report in '03 saying he had been captured in Iran.

Something tells me this guy wouldn't go without a major fight, though.

15. Pakistan officials deny report al-Zawahri arrested...Reuters
ISLAMABAD, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Pakistan officials denied an Al Arabiya television report on Monday that top al Qaeda official Ayman al-Zawahri has been arrested in Pakistan.

"It is a negative, it is wrong," Brigadier Javed Cheema, Director General of the Interior Ministry's Crisis Management Cell, told Reuters

After all, hasn't he been hanging out on the Crawford movie set for a while, waiting for October?

20. How you'll know whether it's true or not...
If Faux Nooz immediately begins a 3-hour retrospective on his 'terror career' ... you'll know it's true. And staged.

If the whores there ignore the story - you KNOW it's BS.

Question: Is Israel Radio like Fox for the Likud, by chance? Is it owned by Hollinger/Rupert/Scaife or some such?

Reuters is not usually wrong, and it wouldn't surprise me if the Paks wouldn't deny it until the US picked him up to take him to Gitmo... So I'm not ready to trust this 'negative' from the Paks w/o question just yet...

I, for one, very much hope this is TRUE. Yes, it will likely help *, but the safety of my country comes first I'm afraid...

23. Catching fish and Joe Bob
It makes sense that they would catch a big one just before the elections to justify the opinion of those who say that we will never take bin Laden because family matters.

I love the quips above - sounds like the same huge fish being caught and released so that every fisherman in the state can have a story to tell.

Keep the quips coming. Bob. Then Joe Bob. Then Joe Bob from Southern Egypt. Thanks! Glad I sat in your booth with ma' beer. Next round's on me.

24. We might as well keep it up
...as long as irony is still fresh. With this administration in power, it is fast becoming redundant.
