LAS VEGAS (AP) - The federal government will transfer a $30 million parcel of land to the Department of Veterans Affairs for a new hospital in southern Nevada to help care for the fastest-growing population of veterans in the nation.
The $295 million medical center in North Las Vegas will include a 90-bed hospital, a 120-bed nursing home and a benefits office, VA Secretary Anthony Principi announced Monday.
"Site selection puts Nevada veterans an important step closer to 21st century health care at a 21st century facility," Principi said at a news conference.
Interior Secretary Gale Norton told the crowd of several dozen veterans and local officials that President Bush and his administration have made veterans' care a top priority.
"Today it gives us a great deal of pleasure to give back something to our veterans," Norton said. "I can't think of a more important use of our public lands than providing our veterans with the quality medical care they need and deserve."
