WP: Once Bedrock GOP, Granite State Is in Play
By David S. Broder

(snip)

To its surprise, New Hampshire has found itself a battleground, joining West Virginia and New Mexico on the short list of low-population states so closely contested that both Republicans and Democrats believe they have no choice but to battle for a narrow advantage.

It certainly was not that way the first time a George Bush faced a Democrat from Massachusetts. In 1988, when the current president's father ran against Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, New Hampshire was never a worry. Vice President Bush trounced the man from the neighboring state 62 percent to 36 percent.

But the New Hampshire that confronts President Bush and Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) this year is a far different state.

1. Nice story, and by David Broder, too.
He has been a little center-left lately.

2. That is great news...
...I would love to see this country come to its senses and have every state give their vote to Kerry/Edwards and tell the BushCo crowd to go packing. Then for good measure have Kerry appoint a special prosecutor to hold these bastards accountable for their misdeeds, their mistakes and their sheer stupidity.

3. It might make a difference..
Gore States + NH = 264.

Then we pick from the following for the other 6EVs:
- West Virginia
- Virginia
- North Carolina
- Florida
- Ohio
- Missouri
- Arkansas
- Tennessee
- Arizona
- Colorado
- Nevada

Our options are open :)

5. I'm a little bit worried about losing wisconsin
That would suck. Alot of people here are doing everything they can, to elect Kerry though. I see it as the most vulnerable Gore state.

6. I do too.
The latest poll I've seen has it dead-even, which I suppose is a bit better than recent ones. I wonder if Kerry's recent comments on the Bush dairy scheme will make a difference?

I do have faith in Wisconsin though. If voter registration statistics show anything, it's that our side has taken away (and reversed!) a very strong traditional GOP advantage: the ground game. That gives me tons of hope..

10. Here's an article on gopwomen for Kerry!
Edited on Mon Sep-27-04 11:24 PM by zidzi
in New Hampshire..

snip~
Members of the new "GOP Women for Kerry Steering Committee" discussed ways to spread the message that the "W" in George W. Bush stands for "wrong" not "women."

Nan Stearns of Amherst said she and her husband both were Republicans but the war in Iraq horrified them so much they switched their support first to Democrat Howard Dean, then Kerry.

"I am so concerned with the women in our country who are sending their husbands and sons off to war," she said. "That is alone something dreadful George Bush has done to the women in our country."

11. And another article from yesterday about
Hilary Cleveland(friend of daddybush and babs)of New Hampshire, who is the Steering Committee Chairwomen for gop women for Kerry..
snip~
New Hampshire does not get the battleground state attention that Ohio and Pennsylvania receive, but if Hilary Cleveland has anything to do with it, Bush will not get four more years to conduct war on Iraq. On her New London kitchen table is a porcelain bowl from China, a gift from Barbara and George H.W. Bush. Her late husband was Colgate Cleveland, 10-term Republican Congressman from the Granite State. Hilary Cleveland is chairwoman of the GOP Women for Kerry Steering Committee, organized on Sept. 10.

“This war is very different,” she told The Boston Globe. “I think he is usurping an authority he does not have. He has alienated our allies, destroyed our relations in the Muslim world and actually invited terrorists into Iraq. I think Kerry is our best hope to get us out of Iraq and reestablish diplomatic relations in the world.”

This presidential campaign comes down to this: Is your loved one still in Iraq? Tell me again, why are we there? Are the docks, bridges, tunnels and subways secure? Are you working? Do you have health care? Are your pension benefits or Social Security check what you earned? Those questions are not just political rhetoric, or grist for a slick spinmeister’s mill. They are about the reality of working people’s lives.
