Motorola to Cut 1,000 Jobs, Take Charge
9/28/2004 10:16:00 AM

CHICAGO, Sep 28, 2004 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Motorola Inc. will cut 1,000 jobs worldwide and take a charge of $50 million for severance benefits, officials said Tuesday.

Motorola is completing a spinoff of its chip operations, now operating independently as Freescale Semiconductor Inc., and Motorola spokeswoman Jennifer Weyrauch said that made some corporate positions unnecessary.

"We're eliminating 1,000 positions around the world to better align our work force to support seamless mobility and in anticipation of the Freescale Semiconductor separation," Weyrauch said.

The cuts also include jobs in Motorola's commercial, government and industrial solutions component, the integrated electronic systems area and broadband communications, the company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

1. I don't know how this company stays in business.

They constantly hire and fire people to compensate for their bad business decisions. It's like a big rollercoaster where you're always told to leave the ride at the end. I'd never work for those idiots.

2. AZ depends on Motorola...
used to be main source employer for Phoenix. Within the last 5 years, Motorola has sold their best money-making plants to General Dynamics and hundreds of people were out of work. Pay in AZ is in the middle range and if you worked for Motorola, you were doing well.

I have women friends who worked for Motorola and after they were let go from their jobs, 15 year through 24 year employees, they are making less money or working at two jobs to support their families. To start with, women don't make as much money anyway. If you're a woman and head-of-the household, you do whatever it takes to feed your children.
