Company officials are waiting to hear whether Ultralife will get additional orders from the military for its BA-5390 lithium-manganese dioxide battery, said Bob Fishman, the company’s vice president of finance and chief financial officer. If it doesn’t, as many as 250 workers could get pink slips, he said.
“We’re trying to figure out what potentially could happen if certain things don’t happen,” Fishman said.
Ultralife Batteries employs 600 workers in Newark and 90 at a plant in England.
The contract with the military is up in the air because this fall the Defense Logistics Agency began purchasing batteries for all the branches of the military, Fishman said, adding that the military is being more cautious with purchases of batteries after it nearly ran out of them in Iraq.
