Former hostage Terry Waite urged the Government tonight to press for the release of the four Britons held at Guantanamo Bay.At a Labour Conference fringe meeting, Mr Waite accused ministers of “condoning” their continued incarceration by failing to press harder for their return to Britain.
“You do not fight the terrorists by using the methods of the terrorist,” he warned. “The way to deal with this is for the leadership of the Labour Party to say we will not be robbed of justice and freedom – release the detainees.”
It was reported earlier today that the four Britons – Moazzam Begg, Feroz Abbasi, Martin Mubanga and Richard Belmar – are to face special military tribunals within a month.Mr Waite said there was virtually no difference between their plight and his own five-year incarceration in Beirut.
“They are taken on suspicion. They are detained without due process. They are subject to indignities which we now know have been proven and some, so we are told, stand in danger of being executed.“How a Labour Government of all governments can stand back and allow that to happen, and condone it, defeats me ... and leaves me breathless,” he said.
