Networks to ignore debate camera rules
NEW YORK (AP) — With the first presidential debate Thursday, television networks plan to ignore an attempt by the Bush and Kerry campaigns to stage-manage the event by dictating which camera shots they can or cannot use.

The networks object to a provision in the debate agreement between the two candidates that says they cannot show a reaction shot of Democrat John Kerry when President Bush is speaking, or vice versa.

"The campaigns have agreed to this," said Princell Hair, CNN general manager. "We haven't.

snip.....

Networks are also reluctant to agree to rules that restrict what kind of camera shots they can offer of the audience at the four upcoming debates, three for Kerry and Bush and one for the vice presidential candidates. The campaigns signed a detailed, 32-page agreement on how the debates are to be conducted.

12. If you think Imperial Cable TV Pravda is speaking of using this to
hurt the Emperor in ANY way shape or form, you are kidding yourself.

This will be used SOLELY to hurt Kerry.

They would not DARE incur the wrath that will fall if they fail to be deferential in the extreme to Fearless Fuhrer.

13. Kerry has "Tan from a Can".. Kerry scowled..Kerry rolled his eyes
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 04:02 AM by SoCalDem
That's what they will happily "show us"...and then the Bush camp will huff and puff with faux indignation about how the networks "broke their solemn word"..and they will recuse themselves from the other debates, due to "flagrant disregard for the rules", by those doggoned librul media folks...

mark my words !!

It's just another trap..

20. "Uhh, Camera 2, zoom in on Kerry so we can bump-up the red tones"
"Camera 3, off BushBush's face 2 SECONDS after he's done talking. Not 3 SECONDS, just enough to see that he means what he says."

"Camera 1, the script says that BushBush will be making a "non-verbal gesture" as soon as Kerry is finished here, we want a semi-tight zoom."

5. I don't blame them
This is the only major industrialized country that hands its elections over to politicians instead of a government agency. Forget what the Commission says about being non-partisan: it is clearly bi-partisan. Just look at who the co-chairs are: the former chairs of the two major parties. We don't have a democracy in this country. We have a two party oligarchy.

8. A government agency would be comprised of folks nominated from both
parties, also. I fail to see the difference, except maybe the U.S. method is more public about the partisanship.

7. Sadly, I have no faith in the network coverage not finding some way
to throw it chickenboy's way. And yeah, I thought Fox was the only one covering it.

11. yep
As part of a pool for all the networks, Fox News Channel is operating the cameras at Thursday's debate, scheduled for the University of Miami campus.

"We're providing all the networks' coverage and we're not going to follow directions from outside sources," said Paul Schur, Fox News Channel spokesman.

Fox is expected to provide each network with feeds from several different cameras, giving them each discretion on which shots to air.

NBC News, which will show the debate on its broadcast network and on MSNBC, "will use pictures as we see fit," spokeswoman Barbara Levin said.

Well, I am pissed that they just talk about the "agreement between the candidates" since this is all fuckwad Bush's camp's idea. But hey, it is a start. Now, if we can only get Gwen Ifill and Jim Lehrer to play along. PBS, what happened to your testicles?

16. Bush may as well be running the camera himself...
...If Fox is putting on the show. They will do anything Cheney tells them to do. I am disappointed that Kerry would agree to allow Fox to be the network feed. It will be simply more propoganda disguised as a debate putting Bush in the best light possible.

17. Yeah, it's crap. But if Kerry said anything, BushCo would call foul
What is this, little kids playing wiffle ball? You can't play on my property unless we follow my rules! I'm hoping Kerry is planning to just throw everything out the window along with any network and moderator with any decency, once the debates actually start. That would seriously screw *.
