House leader: Ban on gay marriage will fail
House leader: Ban on gay marriage will fail

Hearst Newspapers
September 29, 2004

WASHINGTON -- House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, acknowledged Tuesday that the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage would fail to win House passage Thursday.

But he insisted that he would go forward with a vote on the amendment anyway.

"The American people need to know where their representatives stand" on the issue, DeLay told a news conference.

DeLay acknowledged that past House votes on gay marriage issues show it is unlikely that the proposed amendment could receive the necessary two-thirds support.

1. In other words
We're determined to waste time on this for purely political purposes, using it as a wedge, when we should be worried about things like national security.

Nice to know the grownups are in charge, eh?

2. They will vote
on the gay marriage amendment even though they don't have enough votes. I guess we didn't need to know where the representatives stood on the ASW.
