Mysterious touchscreen voting machine found
"Mysterious touchscreen voting machine found

"ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Members of the State Board of Elections were surprised to hear reports Tuesday that Diebold touchscreen voting machines similar to those used in Maryland were found abandoned recently on a street and in a bar in Baltimore.

"Joseph Torre, voting systems and procurement director for the agency, confirmed that one machine was found, but assured board members it did not belong to Maryland.

"`It wasn't one of ours,' he said. `All 16,009 units are present and accounted for.'

"`That takes your breath away,' board member Joan Beck said."

1. More of the article
Torre said the machine that was turned in did not have a state identification number on it and the serial number did not match the number of any of the machines purchased by the state. He said Diebold Election Systems had been asked to check the serial number to try to determine where the machine might have come from.

David Bear, a Diebold spokesman, said he was not aware that a machine had been turned in.

Asked about the possible origin of the machine, Torre said, "You can buy one on eBay."

WHAT IN THE HELL DOES HE MEAN BY YOU CAN BUY ONE ON EBAY???????

11. I dunno...this stuff always winds up having to do with kkkarl.
How many times has mysterious electronic equipment"turned up" right before a debate, an election day and on and on?

The strategery isn't always clear at first but it always does do whatever it is that Dr Evil needs it to do.
(I'm sure to get some details way wrong here so please flame gently. I'm more trying to be illustrative than debate-ready).

There was the debate practice tape that resulted in Gore losing his key advisor.

There was the bug planted in kkkarl's office just before an important electon in Texas.
There was kkkarl's Powerpoint presentation found in a park before the mid-terms.

Just smelling rat again, that's all.

10. Now that they've reverse engineered the software, they
don't need the machine anymore. Any PC with a modem
can now be used. Trojan horses to prevent backtracking
are probably already spreading by left and right leaning hackers.

CBS regrets to say we wre premature and are now calling Ohio
for Bush", "Oops ...", "Sorry, one more time...", "Oops .."

38. That's not quite how these work
The Diebold machines call in to a central machine at your local (usually county) registrar of voters. Each machine has a unique RSA key that can only be used once, and the server has a list of "approved keys". You COULD load the software on your PC, and you could even dial up the county server, but without that key it isn't going to authenticate you or accept any of your votes. With literally billions of possible keys out there, the odds of you getting one right are slim. The odds of you getting enough right to influence an election are pretty much zero.

If you want to hack an election, you're better off taking a crack at a real live voting machine.

39. The point to attack would be the central server, know the TP
protocol would help. From what I've heard ( second hand of course )
is that the server side software is pretty week in terms of
security ( an MS Access ) database and juried up TP software.
I'm not betting this thing can't be hacked.

17. Maybe they are Georgia's missing machines?
The observers went to KSU today to visit the Election Center there, and at our request, asked them about voting machines (14-19) which were stolen in a burglary in June 2002. Our worst fears were confirmed that these machines have been in the wild since then, GEMS servers, Touchscreens and Optical Scanners. They were stolen from a Ramada Inn in Macon, Georgia after the system was set up for poll manager training.

KSU's response was that "they were probably kids who threw the machines in the river when they found out what they were."

Sadly, our officials never made an attempt to LOCATE the machines and make no effort to determine if they are being used in a basement somewhere to subvert our elections. I didn't get the impression they dragged the river, either.

19. Absentee in GA does no good
The absentee ballots are scanned into the same GEMS tabulation system and then filed away never to be seen again.

GA's SoS has defined the only legal ballot as the ELECTRONIC version. Your absentee ballot cannot be referred to in a recount or to determine voter intent.

Once scanned, they may as well shred the paper.

so I don't have to wait in the long lines, but that's no better guarantee that some fraud won't take place when the data is sent to Atlanta for consolidation.

I still question how Cleland and Barnes lost.

Votes raise red flag on potential for fraud
Fulton man who cast 2 ballots stirs questions on early polling

By CARLOS CAMPOS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 09/29/04

The case of a Fulton County man facing possible felony charges for voting twice in the July primary has raised questions about the potential for fraud through a new early voting initiative.

Buckhead resident Craig Kidd has acknowledged that he voted twice in July. Kidd said he voted first in the five-day period preceding the election known as advance voting. Kidd said that on the day of the election the following Tuesday, he went to his precinct to make sure he had been recorded as having cast a ballot. Kidd said a poll worker told him he was not listed as having voted early, and advised him to vote again to be sure his vote was counted.

Kidd contacted The Atlanta Journal-Constitution later that day to alert reporters that he was concerned some people were being allowed to vote twice, since it appeared that Fulton County was not keeping track of who had voted early. Kidd worked for the state Senate campaign of Republican Shawn Davis and served as a poll watcher for the Republican Party.

After learning of Kidd's actions, Secretary of State Cathy Cox's office recommended last week that Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard consider pursuing felony charges of voting twice in the same election.

snip....

Sullivan said Kidd's advance vote was tossed out after it was discovered. Early votes are marked with a numbered identification in case they are later challenged, Sullivan said.

snip....

Cox's decision to pursue the matter outraged Randy Evans, the Republican representative on the state Election Board chaired by Cox.

During the meeting Wednesday, Evans charged that Cox, a Democrat, is pursuing criminal charges because the voter is a Republican.

30. I serve on the vote review panel in my county
And we personally get to see every absentee ballot before and after scanning.

I counted during the primaries because I don't trust the machines. All were counted correctly. I'll be counting again in November.

But since you put it like that, what's the point of voting at all in Georgia since the info can be so easily manipulated?

34. Do you get to see the Early Votes (also an absentee precinct)?
And, in reference to your question about voting, I can only say your SoS has made every effort to make it pointless.

It might make sense to ask the SoS that question the next time you see her.

40. Sounds like the folks in Georgia can learn something from the
folks in Texas.

In Texas they start off with an open hand but as the arm and hand moves rapidly through space the hand is made into a ball, (some call it a fist) so fast that no human eye can detect the fist! One can only hear the results when it lands somewhere on the head. Then as the victim is falling to the ground a swift kick to the stomach before victim falls to the ground. This is a Texas Bitch slap

I'm indeed from Colorado. But have seen the Texas bitch slap technique. Next week I'll go into detail how the Colorado bitch slap differs from both Georgia and Texas. Stay tuned!
