Dr. Phil Interviews President, First Lady (on drinking and driving)
WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) says it's "awfully difficult" for parents to urge their children not to drink and drive if they do it themselves.

"The parents have got to understand that when they tell their child something they have to be willing to live it in order for the child to be able to absorb the truth of what the parent is trying to say," Bush said on "Dr. Phil," a daytime television advice show. The interview of Bush and first lady Laura Bush by host Phil McGraw was taped July 29 at the president's ranch in Crawford, Texas, and broadcast Wednesday.

Days before the 2000 presidential election, Bush was caught withholding information about a drunk driving arrest in Maine dating to 1976. He said at the time he had not been specific about the incident earlier because he wanted to keep the information from his twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna.

"It's awfully difficult for a parent to tell a child not to drink and drive when the parent drinks and drives," Bush said in the interview.

Bush, now 58, gave up alcohol at 40 after concluding he was drinking too much. He often refers to the power of faith in that process and once referred to his youthful drinking as a "young and irresponsible" stage of his life.

1. I'm sure ...
they provide the twins (Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle Dum(b)) with plenty of coke and dime bags--Mommie and Daddy-dearest have plenty of connections (wink, wink).

2. He parents like he governs
Dishonestly. Hide the bad news, don't admit mistakes, don't trust the kid to handle the truth. This neither nurtures nor encourages growth.

3. Hard to convince the young of the seriousness of it if you lie about it
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 06:16 PM by daleo
Withholding the truth from your nearly adult daughters until someone digs up your arrest records isn't exactly exemplary behavior if you want to show that you are serious about the subject.

And referring to your years between 18 and 40 as youthful indiscretion doesn't help either.

Let's not forget Pickles little indiscretion behind the wheel either.

4. "Bush, now 58, gave up alcohol at 40"
Where's that video of him drunk in 1992, 6 years after he supposedly gave up drinking?

5. Yeah, well,...whatever "drug" he's on,...his swagger looks like a stagger
,...to me. That "cowboy" is still high on something,...and I can't believe no one has taken notice.

6. Addictions aren't that easy to lose
Giving Jesus all the credit for him "seeing the light" is obviously and completely political. Let's hear from someone who has studied addiction and can tell us what's really going on!

8. How do they feel about running stop signs and killing their boyfriends?
When did the twins learn their mother committed vehicular homicide, but avoided any charges?

12. Young and irresponsible?
HAH.. He said he refers to his drinking days as "young and irresponsible." And he said he gave up drinking at age 40? I sure as hell hope I'm still not "young and irresponsible" when I'm 40.

11. It doesn't look like Dr. Phil mentioned Bush's DUI
but at least it made it into the Yahoo story. I'm just glad to see someone calling Bush on his hypocrisy. Here's hoping the DUI gets a few mentions elsewhere.

15. Jenna was drunk in a bar last week end

according to a post that I read here this week.

I can't believe that he would bold face LIE about his children!

My friend said he saw the show today. Said he had to laugh to keep from crying to hear Bush talk about the importance of family values.

Is Dr. Phil a Republican?
