Powell Calls for End to Mideast Uprising
WASHINGTON -- In a telecast to the Arab world, Secretary of State Colin Powell called on Wednesday for an end to the intifada, the four-year violent Palestinian uprising against Israel.

"What has it accomplished for the Palestinian people?" Powell asked. "Has it produced progress toward a Palestinian state? Has it defeated Israel on the battlefield?"

"So it is time to end this process," he told Al-Jazeera television. "It is time to end the intifada."

At he same time, Powell said President Bush desperately wants to help create a Palestinian state for the Palestinian people to live side-by-side in peace with Israel.

1. greatauntoftriplets calls for an end....
...to the Israeli occupation of the Gaza strip and a halt to construction of the wall cutting off the West Bank.

What have those accomplished for the Palestinian people? Other than to piss them off.

14. Would the wall have been built if the terrorists were not killing innocent
I thought the wall was built to help stop the suicide bombers that are killing innocent women and children in Israel. Was I mislead?

22. yes, you were misled....
The apartheid wall is being built to complete the Palestinian ghetto, solidify the future of the illegal "settlements," control the movement and resource access of the Palestinians, and grab still more of their land.

Enjoy your stay here!

24. enjoy my stay?
Is there a monolithic screed against Israel I should adhere to to be welcome here? Are pro-Israel and Jewish members not allowed to express their opinions and ideas in a peaceful manner here? Is your narrow view of Israel the only allowed view?

25. I am Jewish
and you and them are right....

The wall is being built to stop the bombers but it is also being built to solidify the green line

As usual things are far mroe complex than most people are even willing to aknowledge

Oh and my view... I don't care if the one behind the bomb or bulldozer is what, they go after civilians both sides are wrong, very wrong.

Oh and happy new yaer.

And by the way I usually stay away from these posts because most people cannot see the nuances, very complex nuances, in teh ME...

39. No. The problem has to do with despotic "commanders",...
,...rather than balanced leaderships. True leaders inspire peace through social justice rather than abusive power-mongering tactics via use of destructive clubs.

If both the U.S.A and Israel acted as a member of the world community instead of wielding their power against it,...everyone would advance,...including them. But,..."they" are playing a power game that the rest of the world rejects,...that I reject,...because,...well, I just do not believe that "they" are as benevolent as they, apparently, believe themselves to be. "They" have stirred up entirely too much death and destruction,...to be all that they portray or pretend themselves to be.

Of course,...what I see and say,...is "Just Me" in expression.

11. what Powell says means nothing anymore
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 07:18 PM by Marianne
he is just hanging on pretending to be a SOS. After it is over Powell will continue to make a lot of money writing (by a ghost writer) and promoting books and giving lectures based on his "experience" and insider knowledge.

The man is a wasted, souless individual whose black skin has been exploited and who has willingly lied to the American people, ignoring the thousands of people who would die, innocent people and many children, because of his lies before the Security council.

This is just another man, anxious for power, who could care less about the deaths of thousands of innocent people.

He is trash.

17. Which of the referenced statements are absurd?
"Colin Powell called on Wednesday for an end to the intifada, the four-year violent Palestinian uprising against Israel."

I see no problem here.

"What has it accomplished for the Palestinian people?" Powell asked. "Has it produced progress toward a Palestinian state? Has it defeated Israel on the battlefield?"

Again...no problem.

"So it is time to end this process," he told Al-Jazeera television. "It is time to end the intifada."

I agree. Anyone here disagree with this good idea?

"create a Palestinian state for the Palestinian people to live side-by-side in peace with Israel."

This is a very good idea.

So I ask again...what is absurd about these positive and progressive ideas?

21. Wow, you're really serious!
OK, let me spell it out for you.

A plan is something that actually has an ice cube's chance in hell of being brought about. Telling the intifada to "stop fighting and play nice" is about as patently ridiculous as telling Bin Laden, "OK, you need to come out now, because you've been very, very naughty."

46. "Bush desperately wants to help create a Palestinian state" - Right . . .
I guess that's why he's been work so hard, so very, very hard, for years and years and years on just that issue, right Colin?

I'm sure that the Arab leaders at the Aqaba Summit who heard him state that "God told me to strike the Taliban, and I did. And God told me to strike Saddam Hussein, and I did" were deeply impressed, and prepared to do whatever he wanted in terms of creating a Palestinian state.

And besides, he's done such a great fucking job in creating an Iraqi state that we should all bow to his peeance, freeance, vision of the Middle East - is that it, Colin?

Must think he's Chuck Heston coming down from the mountaintop to deliver what everyone wants to hear at just the right time.

It would be funny if so much death and suffering hadn't preceded it, but it is merely pathetic given the US foreign policy that prolongs the resistance and belies his rhetoric.
