Car Bombs in Iraq Kill at Least 42, Wound 140

The apparently coordinated blasts came hours after a suicide bomber killed two Iraqi policemen and a U.S. soldier by detonating his car at a U.S. checkpoint west of the capital. Another car bomb blew up in the north, killing four people.
Instability is mounting in Iraq (news - web sites) just weeks before the U.S. presidential election in November and four months before Iraq is due to hold its own nationwide polls. Attacks on American troops have risen to around 80 a day from 40 a month ago.

It was not clear if most of the victims were civilians or U.S. troops. A U.S. military spokesman said he was awaiting more information but confirmed U.S. soldiers were hit in the blasts.
Officials at Yarmouk hospital said they were inundated with bodies and had taken in at least 42 dead. They said around 140 people were wounded, most of them children hit by shrapnel.
