"Agere Systems Inc. of Allentown, Pa., which makes semiconductors for telephone networks and computers, will cut 1,100 jobs, or 17 percent of its work force, and end operations at a plant in Florida because of a slowdown in orders.
About 500 employees worldwide will be fired immediately, and a wafer plant in Orlando, Fla., with 600 employees will be closed or sold by the end of next year.
Computer Associates International Inc. of Islandia, N.Y., the software maker operating under federal oversight after an accounting scandal, will fire 800 workers, or 5 percent of its work force, as it trims its product line.

Continental Tire North America said it will proceed with plans to close a plant in Mayfield, Ky., and eliminate 985 jobs by year's end. The Steelworkers union had asked Continental to reconsider the closing."
