Iraq fighters 'have tried to make their own WMD
Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) may not have had weapons of mass destruction before the US-led invasion but the chief US inspector found evidence that Iraqi insurgents have tried to develop them since.

-cut-

The most advanced in this quest has been a previously little known group called al-Abud, the report says, which made several attempts to produce the deadly nerve agent Tabun as well as mustard gas.

It failed, because the chemists it hired lacked expertise or because it could not get all the chemical precursors. However, the chemists did produce simple poisons such as ricin and continued to try to make weapons that could inflict much wider casualties.

-cut-

The two chemists they hired did not have experience making chemical weapons under Mr Hussein's regime. Mr Duelfer fears what might happen if the insurgents got hold of materials dispersed throughout the country by the former regime, as well as the Iraqi scientists with the know-how to make chemical weapons.

4. I'm Going to Make My Own Gold
Out of straw, too.

Seriously, though, while we attacked imaginary enemies in Iraq, we diverted resources that could have been securing real nightmare weapons and the materials to make them. The Iraq war has made our country and the entire globe more vulnerable for horrific terrorist attacks.

6. How DARE they???
How dare they have the audacity not to hold still while we beat the shit out of them, kill their families, destroy their infrastructure, eliminate their religion and their culture, and suck the oil from their land?

I don't like to think of WMDs being used against our soldiers, but my God, we invaded their country. I would be mightily surprised if they did NOT do everything in their power to defend themselves. We would be doing exactly the same thing if someone invaded our country.

We have no business being there in the first place. They did absolutely nothing to deserve what we're doing to their country.

GET OUT NOW.

14. Yes! Why can't they just say "Uncle"?
If our gov't thinks that our "superior weapons technology" will break their will, it has another think coming.

Persecution killed neither the Jews or the Christians; I don't think it will work against the Muslims either.

8. They have also used some of Saddam's old WMD.
Note the sarin gas artillery shell converted to a roadside bomb that they used a few months ago. Fortunately, our bomb disposal guys were not seriuously injured.

9. Note that it never happened.
That story was debunked about a week after it came out. There was no gas or its "binary precursors." Which is why, just recently, the WH admitted it never found and WMDs.

So please stop repeating the bullshit.

11. Sarin

USA Today, 5/25/04 (a week later):

Please provide a reputable link for the debunkation.

======
From NYT:
"Because the binary chemicals were not allowed to mix, there were very, very small traces," General Kimmitt said. "And the E.O.D. people that went up showed minor traces of nerve poisoning."

General Kimmitt said the shell could be several years old. Nerve agents stored in binary shells can be stored for long periods of time, and are relatively harmless as long as the chemicals are not mixed.

12. It was in the NYT.
And other places. It was reasonably widely reported. Check it yourself. You'll find it in the archives.

Why do you think the WH would admit it hadn't found any if it had found some?

13. I have not found support for your claim at NYTimes.com.
If you had a link to support your statement, that would help.

Artillery shells are never manufactured one at a time, with the exception of nuclear shells. There are probably more old sarin shells in Iraq. It's a good thing the terrorists have not been able to locate them.
