Berlusconi under new pressure after EU court opinion

A senior legal officer at the European Union's top court Thursday criticised an Italian law that allowed Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to escape prosecution on charges of false accounting.

Advocate General Juliane Kokott, in a non-binding opinion to the European Court of Justice, said the law violated EU treaties and should therefore be disregarded.

The court must still rule on the matter but the opinions of its advocate general form an important factor in the legal process.

If the court does rule against the Italian legislation, prosecuting magistrates could in theory be able to renew their prosecution of Berlusconi without further ado.
