NRA endorses President Bush

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/10/14/bush.nra.ap/index.html

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The National Rifle Association endorsed President Bush for re-election on Wednesday, promising millions of dollars for ads, phone banks and other get-out-the-vote efforts.

"The Supreme Court is going to be crucial to the future of the Second Amendment, and President Bush will appoint justices that respect the Bill of Rights," NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre told The Associated Press in a phone interview before announcing the endorsement at a news conference in Duluth, Minnesota.

Bush also supports legislation to protect the firearms industry from lawsuits and opposes centralizing files on gun owners, LaPierre said, calling the difference between Bush and Democrat John Kerry on guns "day and night."

5. Why Am I Not Surprised????
The NRA (Nuts Ruining America) used to be a reputable organization. Today, it's a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Republican Party.

16. When was the NRA ever a reputable organization?
Maybe it was before I was born. They're like any other GOP front group.

22. Back in The '60s and Earlier
When their main interest was gun safety. I was taught to shoot by NRA-trained instructors at Boy Scout Camp Allamuchy in NJ back then.

The current NRA leadership (LaPierre, Nugent, et al) has taken a once-great organization and driven it out in the radical fringe.

35. Before you were born? Depends on how old you are...
Correct me you lurking gun loons, but as I recall it was the NRA convention right here in Cincinnati in 1978 or 1979 when the wingnut contingent put to rout the true sportsmen. From that point on, the NRA became a stalking horse for the Republican Party.

How else could a true sportsman like Kerry, who doesn't advocate gun control any more stringent that renewing the assault weapons ban, not get endorsed in favor of a candy-ass like Bush, who frankly couldn't hit a pheasant if it were comatose and staked to the ground.

8. The only surprise is
How come they came out with an endorsement so late in the game. It seemed in 2000 they were all over the place pushing bush. It seems this is a luke warm endorsement compared to 2000.

37. That's My guess too
I think the NRA was putting pressure on Bush to let the assault weapon ban lapse before they would endorse him.

guess enough time has passed that no one is supposed to notice.

19. Yes, he did! I was quite surprised at his comment.
As he was talking about the background checks and gunshow loophole, the first thing that came to mind was the NRA,, and how he i pissing off all those gun nuts in the hinterland. I'm sure we won't hear any of that from him again, but hopefully enough of them were watching the debate and remain outraged for the next 3 weeks!

since Kerry has gone out of his way to irritate that group of voters. For example:

So, the NRA endorses Bush. Is that a surprise?

Or just walking by a couple of guys with signs when a cameraman was nearby? It looks a bit coincidental to me.
