Vacation Over, Bush Will Hit the Road to Talk Jobs
Vacation Over, Bush Will Hit the Road to Talk Jobs
Sat August 30, 2003 03:43 PM ET

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush said on Saturday he planned to travel to three states next week to talk about job growth and the economy.
Bush also touted the benefits that families and workers received from tax cuts earlier this year and said in a Labor Day weekend radio address that worker productivity grew last year at the fastest rate in more than half a century.

The president spoke a day after the Commerce Department released data showing consumer spending, which makes up about two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, grew last month.

"As consumer spending rises, manufacturers are seeing more new orders for their goods," Bush said. "Low interest rates mean businesses have better balance sheets, and families have saved billions of dollars by refinancing their homes. These are the signs of a reviving economy."

"Now we must build on this progress and make sure that the economy creates enough new jobs for American workers," he said.

Bush is really not aware of the unemployment out there and people having to take jobs for lesser pay!
I can't wait to see his reception in Missouri! I was there this summer and let me tell ya the unemployment there due to American Airlines and TWA has been staggering! :bounce:

1. Might as well "talk" them...
...when you can't create them.

Speaking of which, the steady gusher of overseas outsourcing in the Tech industry made me take note the other day while reading Slashdot.org. And what struck me is how techies, while a very astute sort about some political issues (privacy and the state, for instance), are as a whole pretty lost when it comes to understanding that the corporate hand that fed them is now in a mood to bite, and bite really hard...

What astounds me about my fellow Americans is how they can devotedly parse their Ayn Rand and Bill O'Reilly, stuffing their heads full of right wing GreedThink, and then still regurgitate the stuff when the same rancid philosophy yanks their jobs out from under them!

33. It is mind boggling.
I have seen it over and over again. I have friends who are highly educated in computers with careers in unix Admin etc.. *They are currently delivering pizza for a living or doing part-time janitorial work. They never saw it coming, despite many warnings that I gave them.

They were once sudo liberals, or just in college. As soon as they started making bank, they were parroting right wing diatribe. now they have to exist on minimum wage and tips. These examples say that book smarts does not account for everything.

*Please note, there is nothing wrong with the jobs above. A job is a job. It just proves how hard it is to get a job these days, when a computer science degree qualifies you to deliver pizza.

But hey. Go Bush!!

32. Not true-- Reagan's policies were disastrous for Japan's economy
Reagan, and later Bu$h 1, pressured Japan to "fix" things that weren't broken in their economy. Among other things, Reagan-Bu$h pressured Japan to

1) deregulate financial services, leading to a spate of bad loans that have yet to be fully dealt with
2) accept an abrupt 20% increase in the value of the yen that severely hurt exports
3) "voluntarily" curtail exports of well-made, fuel-efficient vehicles and other quality goods to the US
4) build a lot of roads and other civil engineering works that had no use other than for make-work
5) spend much more than what was needed on gold-plated weapons systems
6) tax personal savings account interest at a flat rate of 20% to reduce incentives for Japanese to save their hard-earned money
7) allow giant retailers to run roughshod over smaller mom-and-pop outfits

4. From the looks of it, Bush must have had his girl friends do his homework
in Econ 101

With the largest deficiet in the history of mankind on his lap, he talks of how the tax cuts will help America recover.

The man slept thru class.

His professors must be contacted for proof.

5. So, "worker productivity" grew, huh?
Bush also touted the benefits that families and workers received from tax cuts earlier this year and said in a Labor Day weekend radio address that worker productivity grew last year at the fastest rate in more than half a century.
I'm sure it did. An employee scared-shitless for their job isn't going to balk when Da Boss commands them to work harder and faster -- and, by the way, we aren't going to pay you for those two extra hours of overtime a day.

7. Could someone refresh me
How is worker productivity measured? The statement seems a little sketchy at best. Of course he would tout one positive among so many negatives. Time for a replacement worker for his position.

Who created these numbers?

Everyone he has appointed has some kind of criminal backround , so how can the public trust any figure that comes out of this gov't?

where the work costs 1/3rd to 1/10th of what it costs here and BINGO, on the paper the stockholder sees, worker productivity has really gone up nicely.

26. Too true.
Workers who were not affected by layoffs are two-stepping to the overtime beat bumping into walls. Many companies who depend on state contracts are dumping employees because of lack of neeeded work that states cannot afford.

since my coworkers got laid off I have to work extra hours; I'm constantly on-call and get called even when I'm on vacation. I guess you could say my "productivity" is up but I'm also tired and depressed.

6. Living wages
Does he have any idea how many jobs do NOT provide a living wage? How many people are working three and four jobs to try and make-do?

I didn't see any of the "tax benefit" that he touts so strongly. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

He makes me ill. Why don't more people see through this charlatan?

9. I'm afraid his phony attempts to convince people he cares about jobs
Will be disregarded as Iraq blows up into a major catastrophe. There is no chance of a true economic recovery with the robber barons in control. They are looting as much as possible in their short and ugly reign. The working man will see no relief until a patriotic Democrat is back in the White House, and the Democrats get control of Congress again.

That's what Jr. heard in church this morning according to Yahoo's story about his road trips.

The reason we're in this mess is his fundamentalism and self-righteousness -- and these have been fortified. God help the USA.

24. AWOL would get a thundering reception.....
if he took his tour to India and China where
he has been instrumental in increasing employment
by creating millions of manufacturing jobs.

After completing this monumental tour where
everywhere he goes he is sure to be soundly
applauded by grateful Indian and Chinese
citizens he should travel to Iraq where I
would like to see him attend a "parade of freedom".
This would be an opportunity for recently freed
Iraqis to show their deep appreciation to
AWOL for all the astounding changes he has
brought to their way of life.
