'Scores of civilians' killed in Falluja

Tuesday 09 November 2004, 23:53 Makka Time, 20:53 GMT

Muhammad Abbud said he watched his nine-year-old son bleed to death at their Falluja home, unable to take him to hospital as fighting raged in the streets and bombs rained down on the Iraqi city.

<snip>

"My son got shrapnel in his stomach when our house was hit at dawn, but we couldn't take him for treatment," said Abbud, a teacher. "We buried him in the garden because it was too dangerous to go out. We did not know how long the fighting would last."

Residents say scores of civilians have been killed or wounded in 24 hours of fighting since US-led forces pushed deep into the city on Monday evening.

Doctors said people brought in at least 15 dead civilians at the main clinic in Falluja on Monday. By Tuesday, there were no clinics open, residents said, and no way to count casualties.

<snip>

Sami al-Jumaili, a doctor at Falluja Hospital, said the city was running out of medical supplies.

"There is not a single surgeon in Falluja. We had one ambulance hit by US fire and a doctor wounded. There are scores of injured civilians in their homes whom we can't move," he said by telephone from a house where he had gone to help the wounded.

"A 13-year-old child just died in my hands."

2. We have humane precision weapons
It's the insurgents fault.
Freedom is marching on.
Iraqi's will eventually grow weary of the insurgents for bringing destruction on them.

I read so much it is hard to keep the sources strait. Aljazeera gets many of their reports from Reuters/AP/AFP ...and witnesses on the ground! Can you imagine that kind of reporting in the US???

Reuters ..... from the bottom of the article if you bothered to read it... :eyes:

your selection of "multiple news sources" doesn't include Al Jazeera?

Most of us at DU rely on multiple news sources and that would include multiple international news sources, such as Al Jazeera.

Go watch Control Room, then come back and argue against A-J.

There is certainly nothing in this report that raises any particular cause to doubt its gist. It is possible the number of civilian deaths cited is somewhat larger than the actual current toll, but that is normal in early reports from a chaotic and violent situation. It is an error, too, that is often remedied as time goes by, one way or another.

To suppose this operation is being conducted without inflicting civilian casualties strains credulity. It is clear that by no means all the citizens of the town have departed; no men of military age were allowed to depart by the encircling soldiers, and yet surely not all such were armed fighters, although a higher proportion of them may become such as the days wear on, since men who feel they will be killed in any case often desire some escort to the other world. There are certainly families including elderly persons, women and children, who have not departed, owing to a lack of any place to go, or resources to establish themselves even temporarily anywhere else, and there are people who will have remained in the hope, probably futile but understandable, of safeguarding their possessions and property. These people will take heavy casualties in the fighting going on; you must be aware of that. "Precision" munitions do generally hit what they are aimed at, but whether they are aimed at the proper target is a very different question; in the heat of battle they often are not. There is also a great deal of none too precision stuff flying about; mortar rounds, launched grenades, machine gun and automatic rifle fire. It would greatly surprise me to learn U.S. forces kill even as many armed men as unarmed civilians in this exercise. My expectation is about two armed fighters for seven civilians, as an average ratio.

"War is cruelty, and cannot be refined."

23. anger building up in Irag over Falluja

Published on Monday, November 8, 2004 by Inter Press Service

Resistance over Fallujah Builds Up in Baghdad
by Dahr Jamail

BAGHDAD - The anger building up in Baghdad over the imminent attack on Fallujah is a warning that U.S. forces could start off more than they can handle.

The sharp increase in attacks on U.S. and allied forces has been only the most violent form of rising hostility. But it is not an extremist few that are becoming more and more strongly opposed to the occupation and now a U.S. assault on Fallujah.

What Iraqi people are saying could be even more worrying to the occupation forces than the attacks.

32. It actually tends to be quite accurate...
the information it presents can be found elsewhere with a little trouble, but their focus of coverage on the Middle East is useful.

I am only speaking of the English internet version, since that is the only part with which I am familiar.

10. Scores?
When this is over it'll be hundreds if not thousands dead. And what about the refugees? Did 100,000 leave? 200,000? Where do they go? What about food and shelter? I don't think there are any NGOs operating in the country. This is an enormous humanitarian crisis. The ramifications are enormous. I can't see how this doesn't further rent the country and create more insurgents. Fallujah=Grozny.

He can't take control of the MidEast unless MILLIONS die.

What he doesn't get is that he still won't get control. At that point China, Russia, India and the EU would ally to make toast points out of us and share the oil among themselves.

14. Hospital hit as fighting rages in Falluja
Warplanes have bombed a government clinic in the centre of Falluja as US ground forces engaged in pitched battles with fighters defending the city.

Residents said the one-storey Popular Clinic which had been receiving wounded anti-US fighters and civilians was hit overnight as US-led forces pressed into the city.

The residents said on Tuesday it was impossible to reach the clinic because of heavy bombing and US tanks in the area.

The clinic's telephones were no longer working.

An Iraqi journalist, Abu Bakr al-Dulaimi, told Aljazeera that the overnight bombings which continued for more than 10 hours targeted everything in the city including the hospital, houses as well as cars.

...
"We are determined to clean Falluja from the terrorists," interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said on Monday in Baghdad.

http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/D6E6534F-75E3-4830-B5ED-827BF5094113.htm

So, cleansing Fallujah of the "terrorists" involves slaughtering civilians, bombing hospitals, and firing at ambulances....

More "liberation".
