Galloway rocked by Saddam claim

By Paul Cheston, Evening Standard Courts Correspondent
15 November 2004

Rebel MP George Galloway was "squashed completely flat" by a newspaper claim that he was paid thousands of pounds by Saddam Hussein's regime, the High Court heard today.

The allegation was like a rock " propelled downhill onto Mr Galloway's head", the court was told.

Mr Galloway had met Saddam 10 years ago and was reported as praising the tyrant's personal courage - a claim which had severely embarrassed the MP.

But his barrister Richard Rampton QC, told the court that he had been "a long-standing opponent of Saddam".

3. Wonder how much Saddam gave Arlen Specter
in 1990?

Did essentially the same thing, right in front of Congress - gave guarded praise for a "strong leader" . . .

5. Timing is everything.
If he had been on the bandwagon 20 years earlier, no problem. IIRC, this was based on paper evidence "found" right after the invasion.

6. Galloway is suing the Telegraph for libel
It takes a fair bit of reading the article to get to the part that explains that this is part of his suit against the Telegraph. He is actually telling how he much he was damaged by the false allegations (he claims they are false of course in his libel suit). This article does a pretty good job of obscuring this.
