Open letter to CNN's Christopher Crommett from Venezuela's Media Minister Andres Izarra
The following is a letter from the Venezuelan Communication and Information Andres Izarra to Mr. Crommett regarding the Posada case
Dear Mr. Crommett:
This is to submit the results of an evaluation concerning your news coverage May 18, 2005 on the Luis Posada Carriles case. Your report was exceptionally biased seeing as it not only minimized the horrendous crimes committed by Posada, but also gave weight to the Bush administration’s position before the “dilemma” that the case represents for Washington in taking a favorable decision with respect to terrorist Posada Carriles without putting at risk its image of leader in the “fight against terrorism”.
Any reference to the “possibility” of Venezuela turning him over to Cuban authorities is totally disrespectful because the Government of Venezuela has always acted in accordance with the laws and international agreements, including human, individual and collective rights. Furthermore, it was also disrespectful for Venezuelan Executive Vice President José Vicente Rangel (second person in charge of the Venezuelan government), who had already issued declarations, stating that Posada would not be turned over to Cuban authorities. The following are some of the issues we refer to with respect to your news coverage on the Posada case:
Wide news coverage of Bush administration high-ranking officials or journalists who are openly opposed to the government of Hugo Chávez, such as Governor Jeb Bush and Miami Herald columnist Andrés Openheimer, the latter claims that Venezuelan Judicial Power entities are politicized and lack independence.
By virtue of the aforementioned letter, the grave implications of the Posada case, and his fair extradition request by the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, I cordially and respectfully invite CNN Español to deal with the parties involved in the case with due respect and in a fair and biased manner because we are all entitled to unbiased information
