October 6, 2005—George W. Bush and his administration announced yesterday that they intend to dispatch federal troops to enforce quarantines in the event of an alleged bird flu outbreak, raising immediate prospect that in the not-distant future, soldiers will cordon off American communities suspected of flu outbreaks.

This followed a closed-door session in which the US Congress was propagandized about a bird flu pandemic scenario by the Bush administration's Health and Human Services secretary, Michael Leavitt. This session "scared the hell" out of Senator Harry Reid, and other congressional leaders, who are not only poised to grant Bush authority to call in troops when he chooses, but are in the process of introducing a new bill calling for the creation of a "flu pandemic coordinator" within the White House—placing yet more power directly into the hands of Bush and future presidents.

In response, Dr. Irwin Redlener, associate dean of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and director of its National Center for Disaster Preparedness, blasted Bush's "extraordinarily Draconian measure," and said it plainly:

"The translation of this is martial law in the United States."

18. Tex..while I agree the Bush Crime Family has murdered
in the past,NYC would pose a HUGE problem.Remember their are 7/8
million citizens who need to eat and travel.Plus what about energy?
Millions of NYC homes need oil.JFK airport,LaGuardia airport, cant have
a halt in people moving about.I still believe it can't happen in a major metro city.

4. So, they slap some troops around a city, enforce a 24x7 curfew, and...
...tell everyone it's because of the "bird flu." Everyone cowers indoors, and a few hundred thousand people die from no food and no water. Betcha it happens in a couple of blue states...

What an opportunity to eliminate those evil-doer

us with ebola.

6. that's right, that was the only subject @ his press conf....
the other day he seemed to know just how quickly to have an answer on the tip of his tongue.

while avian flu IS a major problem, there's little doubt in my mind; they are thinking of ways to initiate 'martial law via bird flu' with little opposition from laws & civil rights as a blanket federal action top to bottom for whatever possible contingent imo

14. This IS already law
The legal language was put in place shortly after 9-11. Several years ago, while discussing some of my son's minor health problems with my doctor I discovered this.

I don't know exactly what I've done with the info- but, I have read the entire legal document that ALREADY gives them permission to do this. If I remember correctly, the way it was written was that if one person in San Diego, for ex, is struck with small pox this gives them the right to a) mass vaccinate everyone- even against their will, b) to quarentine and c)to put martial law in place without going thru congress.

I will try to dig up the link!

24. It's scary, but seems too incredible
Beyond the fact that they're evil & all - how would they do it? They've already called up all of the military & most of the National Guard troops to Iraq. It would take a whole lot of troops to occupy a major city. Plus the fact that it's hard to believe that the American military would really do it - it's neocons, not the military, that dream up these kind of scenarios. It would be difficult to keep the truth from coming out - everyone now has cell phones, etc. They couldn't keep journalists out of New Orleans. I tend to think (hope) that it's just one of Bush's little delusions & he'll move on.

27. Exactly my reaction to Avian Flu pandemic
It would serve as a means by * to declare martial law anywhere there was an outbreak. It wouldnt take long for this to be implemented nation wide to "protect" us, plus it would serve to allow *co to suspend elections and thus leave him STILL as POTUS.
