Too many vigils for U.S. soldiers in Iraq
My nephew just finished his Iraq tour. He's in the demographic for becoming a casualty; low income, age 26, no higher education and from a small town. When military deaths reached 1,000, I hosted a candlelight vigil honoring these soldiers' lives. I held his picture titled "Bring our nephew home," only to return for a vigil when we reached 2,000 deaths.

The time between one to 1,000 and 1,000 to 2,000 decreased noticeably. More than 2,100 deaths are reported as I write; that will bring the coming 3,000 mark at a quickening pace. This is not winning.

The Bush administration suggested low casualties and $1 billion in cost; the cost might even be repaid with Iraqi oil revenues. Now we are up to hundreds of billions and 40,000 plus lives.

"Met with roses" and "the insurgency is in its last throes," Vice President Cheney? A connection between 9/11 and Iraq? Iraq had ties with al-Qaida? You now want us to "trust" you to not torture prisoners?

Cheney states a pullout "would be a victory for the terrorists." The terrorists already had victory by sucking America even deeper into the Middle East. The deeper we entrench ourselves, the greater the final consequences.
