Rumsfeld on the ropes
analysis | His `Rumstud' days are long gone, as is the appetite for his glib ripostes. But though he stumbles badly at the podium, his boss won't let him fall. By Tim Harper

WASHINGTON

Maybe the key to one of the U.S. capital's most enduring soap opera plotlines is buried right there, in the aphoristic world of Donald Rumsfeld.

Maybe, as he's wont to say, "If you are not criticized, you may not be doing much."

Maybe it's one of those "unknown unknowns."

After all, "there are known knowns," he once explained.

"These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know.

"But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know."

What a story about Rumsfeld. The people who are giving their point of view give FAR too generous an assessment of Rumsfailed. Do people just have an intense need to have a hero? Is that why they're so blind when it comes to leaders who are really corrupt?

A "renegade", or a reformer, a maverick who's going to turn an ossified institution (the military) on its head and revamp it.

Why do people give him ANY credit for anything? It's just remarkable, and it tells me this old creep has been quite the spokesman, since he has enough people giving him credit for things during his long career in the public "service".

First of all, this man is a war monger and a profiteer. He has siphoned off so many tax dollars to his cronies. Even the years when he was the CEO at Searle, he funneled lots of money in crony contracts to that company. He was even on a board that sold nuclear technology to N. Korea. And don't forget the handshake with Good Ole Boy Saddam.

This man would sell his mother for $5.00 if he could exchange it for a few pineapple grenades. He is and always will be a war-profiteering warmonger.
