District pulls plug on speech

Foothill valedictorian criticizes decision to censor her proclamation of faith

By ANTONIO PLANAS
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Foothill High School Valedictorian Brittany McComb is pictured at her Henderson home on Friday. McComb's speech at the high school's graduation ceremony on Thursday was cut short because officials said its religious references crossed over into proselytizing.

She knew her speech as valedictorian of Foothill High School would be cut short, but Brittany McComb was determined to tell her fellow graduates what was on her mind and in her heart.

But before she could get to the word in her speech that meant the most to her -- Christ -- her microphone went dead.

The decision to cut short McComb's commencement speech Thursday at The Orleans drew jeers from the nearly 400 graduates and their families that went on for several minutes.

However, Clark County School District officials and an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union said Friday that cutting McComb's mic was the right call. Graduation ceremonies are school-sponsored events, a stance supported by federal court rulings, and as such may include religious references but not proselytizing, they said.

3. THEY ARE PERSECUTING XTIANS!!!!!11
What is the world coming to when we can't tell a captive audience at a tax-payer sponsored event about the glory of Jeebus?!!?!?!!!1

Oy.

Yes, we know you really like God. We know you think Jesus is really cool. But could you just, you know, not tell me about it?

5. I would pay MONEY to see a student preach for SATAN at graduation
It's really the ONLY way to make people understand, isn't it?

4. Here's what you do when kids want to proselytize in a school talent show
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 03:02 PM by IanDB1
When someone's mommy "encourages" their eight year-old girl to sing, "My Invisible Friend Jesus will kill the Sodomites," the school should let her sing.

Then, some other parent (or teacher) needs to "encourage" their child to sing a Muslim song in praise of Allah.

Then, some other parent (or teacher) needs to "encourage" their child to sing The Israeli National Anthem.

Then, some other parent (or teacher) needs to "encourage" their child to sing, "Imagine" by John Lennon.
http://www.oldielyrics.com/lyrics/john_lennon/imagine.html

Then, some other parent (or teacher) needs to "encourage" their child to sing, "Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboys_Are_Frequently,_Secretly_Fond_of_Each_Other

Then, some other parent (or teacher) needs to "encourage" their child to sing, "Dumb Dumb Dorothy"
http://www.threeweirdsisters.com/lyrics_dumbdorothy.htm

Then, some other parent (or teacher) needs to "encourage" their child to sing, "Hallelujah! Evolution"

http://www.evolvefish.com/fish/product1053.html

Then, some other parent (or teacher) needs to "encourage" their child to sing, "The Hymn To Satan"

Then, some other parent (or teacher) needs to "encourage" their child to sing...

And then, when all the children have been exploited to their fullest, the school is torn apart, families all hate one another, and the lawyers are all wealthy, justice will be served.

THIS is why we don't turn schools into a battleground for religion, folks!

The kids are there to LEARN-- not to be pawns in a religious war waged by their parents-- Sectarian Violence waged by proxy.

The talent show should close with THIS song by Three Weird Sisters. Here are the last two paragraphs:

Six Days, By Gwen Knighton
<snip>

In just six days my teacher's god made sky and sea and land,
And she thinks every one of us is in that same god's hand.
But I remember back before they passed that resolution
That hushed up evolution with a Biblical solution.

That's what they teach us in school.
Five days out of seven, I hear my folks are fools.
Mom and Dad say faith is in the heart, it's not a battle to be won,
But I think I'm the battleground this war is fought upon.
Mom and Dad say faith is in the heart, it's not a battle to be won,
But I think I'm the battleground this war is fought upon.

... and let the Sectarian Violence resume!

After all... that sort of thing worked for Bosnia, Iran, Iraq... what could go wrong?

7. But don't you know
the US is a Xtian nation?

:sarcasm:

Selfish, selfish people. They're right, everyone else is wrong and they are there to show everyone else the light because it's their xtian duty! They're concerned about their own souls, not anyone else's. And when they are told to knock it off already, then they're being persecuted.

10. "When the President Talks To God"
http://www.plyrics.com/lyrics/brighteyes/whenthepresidenttalkstogod.html

"When The President Talks To God"

When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women’s' rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God say ever change his mind
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
I wonder which one plays the better cop
We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke
No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke
That's what God recommends

When the president talks to God
Do they drink near beer and go play golf
While they pick which countries to invade
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess god just calls a spade a spade
When the president talks to God

When the president talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
When the president talks to God?

I doubt it

I doubt it

8. Dear Brittany (and whoever put you up to this crap) I, quite frankly, do
not give a DAMN about what is in your heart when it comes to deities. it doesn't matter whether it is god, christ, dionysus, mithras, zeus, thor, hecate, cerridwen, etc. this has NOTHING to do with taxpayer-funded secular education. if your deity is THAT important to you that you feel the need to inflict him on others, why the HELL weren't you at an xian school? nobody would have cared which deity you referenced in your speech then. but, nooooooooo, you and your parents chose for you to be educated at taxpayer expense, in a SECULAR (meaning NON-RELIGIOUS, in case your vocabulary lessons didn't cover it), and you STILL try to push your religious notions onto others. guess the part about separation of church and state in civics didn't quite take, did it?

For the sake of others, I trust you are going to an xian university, where your proseletyzing won't be so intrusive and annoying.
