Molly Ivins: "I think we got a winner (It's Dean!)
My fellow Dems, I think we have got ourselves a winner
By Molly Ivins
FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM

AUSTIN, Texas -- No one has been waiting with bated breath for me to make up my mind about the Democratic presidential candidates, but I have, and you might be interested in how I got there. I'm for Howard Dean -- because he's going to win.
It is the bounden duty of bleeding-heart liberals like myself to make our political choices based on purity of heart, nobility of character, depth of compassion, sterling integrity and generosity of spirit. The concept of actually winning a political race does not, traditionally, influence the bleeding heart liberal one iota -- certainly not in the primaries.
Edit ...
Dean gives a hell of a speech -- even if you're Republican, you should go and hear him just for the experience. But I fretted about Dean on TV -- TV is so important. How could anyone poker up on Margaret Carlson of PBS, not one of the world's toughest interviewers? But then I saw Dean laugh his way through a Chris Matthews interview (which he should have done with Tim Russert, who was hell-bent on gotcha questions), and I know the guy can take care of himself. So he fights back if you get in his face -- that's not all bad.
I know, he's even less of a liberal than Bill Clinton was, but I don't think Dean is a moderate centrist. I think he's a fighting centrist. And folks, I think we have got ourselves a winner here.

2. I hope Molly's right!
Makes me feel good when a Texas liberal believes a Democratic candidate can beat Bush.

A lot of people say we can't win by waging an angry campaign. Well, I think a whole lot of Americans are angry about a whole lot of things. And if they aren't angry yet, they should be!

:grr:

4. Dean for President
Bush is a wartime president and, as such, has a great advantage. Ergo, our candidate must make it clear to the people that he/she will do virtually anything to protect this country. Our candidate must make it clear that he/she disagrees with Bush 100% and will do things much differently as regards Iraq. But our candidate must also make it clear that he supports the U.S. and our troops 100%. I don't get this message from Dean.

5. We can support our troops without being warmongers

I think Americans want strength AND justice. Otherwise we would be fascist. Here's what Dean says on his web site:

My opposition to the war, however, is part of a comprehensive view of America’s role in the world that I presented to the Council on Foreign Relations on June 25th (click here for full texthttp://www.deanforamerica.com/site/PageServer?pagename=policy_speech_foreign_cfr). In that speech, I laid out four goals for American leadership in the world:

• First, defeat the threat posed by terrorists, tyrants, and technologies of mass destruction.

• Second, strengthen our alliances and ensure Russia and China are fully integrated into a stable international order.

• Third, enlarge the circle of beneficiaries of the growing world economy.

• And fourth, ensure that life on our fragile planet is sustainable.

Fifty-five years ago, President Harry Truman delivered what was known as the Four Point speech. In it, he challenged Democrats and Republicans alike to come together to build strong and effective international organizations, to support arrangements that would spur global economic recovery, to join with free people everywhere in the defense of human liberty, and to draw upon the genius of our people to help societies who needed help in the battle against hunger and illness, ignorance, and despair.

6. Molly and I agree on one important thing:
that this is the year to be practical. While Kucinich has my heart, I have not campaigned for him. He would not be elected if he were the nominee.

I am looking for a winner. More and more, I am feeling like I have found that winner - Dr. Howard Dean.

Yes, he is way too conservative for me, but Dean has a chance at defeating Bush. In 2004, that is good enough for me.
