Sniper was an accused, but Khadr is an 'enemy'

Lee Boyd Malvo was a 17-year-old groomed to kill by his surrogate father.

He will go down in the annals of crime as the "Washington Sniper,'' a boy molded to murder, carefully trained to take aim at random victims through the telescopic lens of an assault rifle, and never ask why.

In many ways, Malvo was little different from Omar Khadr, except the latter's brainwashing started much earlier, from the cradle, born into a family intimately aligned with violence and global jihad. That was their mission.

The contrast is that Malvo – convicted of "an act of terrorism'' on the murder counts – got his day in open court as an accused. Khadr's day of reckoning, when it comes, will likely be before a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay, under substantially divergent rules of evidence, as an "enemy combatant.''
