Putting God Back In Politics
Didn't see this posted anywhere.

As the Democratic candidates for president attend religious services for the holidays, their celebrations may be tempered by an uncomfortable fact: churchgoing Americans tend to vote Republican...

1. I wouldn't worry about it....
We can't change the minds of fundamentalists, and anyways they're a minority. An ignorant, loud minority, but whatever...

Go check out the lounge though, if you feel that ALL churchgoers are repugs. There's a lot of Xian Dems and DUers here. After all, Christ was a liberal....

To paraphrase the dude from Coll Hand Luke, "Some people you just can't REACH."

2. Did you see those stats by Pew?
That would seem to fly in the face of your very prejudical "ignorant, loud minority" remark.

3. I was distinguishing between Xians and fundamentalists.
There are millions of good, compassionate christians out there, and far less fundamentalists, who often behave like the Spanish Inquisition is still going on.

There's a LOT of churchgoing liberals....And no, I don't trust polls.

5. Why not work to change that tendency?

Democrats have ceded this "higher ground" for too long (basically the price of supporting Roe v. Wade)... but there are movements among faith groups to look beyond that and support Democratic ideals of peace, equality, and helping your fellow man.

I think a lot of good people (Christian or not) are disgusted by the actions of Bush & Co. and are seeing through the hypocrisy of "war is peace" and "freedom is slavery" and the slaughter of tens of thousands of people (more or less) in the name of God and country.

For years, military families and parents have also been ceded to the Republicans, but after the losses and lies of these wars, the indefinitely extended tours of duty, and the slashing of pay and benefits, they're going to realize that a $400 tax cut is far too cheap a price to put on the loss of a son, daughter, or spouse.

6. I do not see military families & parents as ceded
There are plenty of Blacks, Latinos and an ever-increasing number of Women in the military.
When I went into the military, it was to keep a roof over my head, pay the bills, and put food on the table.
I am a Democrat because Republicans put crime and hardcore drugs on the streets of NYC when I was growing up(1980s and early 90s).

To me, the Republican Party is the party of poverty, crime, starvation, and of no future.

7. Religion ALWAYS has a negative effect on human interaction.
The only purpose religion has is to control people. George W. Bush was a drug abuser and an alcoholic. His religion helps him control his substance abuse, but his misguided religious beliefs also give him a sense of abusive self-rightious arrogance.

I'm afraid that the Democrats are far too busy trying to destroy each other rather than trying to present a united front to win this years election. Just wait to see how bad things will get when we have a religiously insane administration that cannot be held accountable for re-election.
