BAUMHOLDER, Germany — When Spc. Ricardo Espinosa broke the news to his wife on Nov. 21, 2001, that he was joining the Army — something he had always wanted to do — the upside was that their first duty station would be Germany.

“In my mind, I saw us having wonderful excursions in Europe,” Stephanie Espinosa said, “happy family in Germany.”
