Small and midsized manufacturers, who almost never come to these things, came this year to say, "We're getting killed." We've lost 84,000 manufacturing jobs in Wisconsin. Even though these people are conservative Republicans, they are saying, "We are pleased that you voted against NAFTA and GATT, and most favored nation status for China, because they were not fair agreements. We need fair trade, not free trade." People feel like our economy has been shipped overseas.
Q Is there support for President Bush's contention that Republican tax cuts are producing recovery?
A The administration is not doing nearly as well on these issues as they think they are. People are starting to really talk about the federal deficit again. I first ran for the U.S. Senate on the position that we ought to bring down the deficit. We have the largest deficit in American history, because we plowed ahead with two tax cuts, especially the second one after 9/11, that really shouldn't have been done.
If you put together the feeling that things aren't quite right on the international front, with the jobless recovery, and throw in this enormous deficit, I think there's a feeling that this country isn't being very well run right now.

Hmm, fair trade, health care, oppostition to the Iraq War,and opposition to the tax cuts. I wonder which candidate has progressive populist positions on all of these.
