Is seceding anti-American?
http://www.examiner.com/x-1765-Underground-Examiner~y2009m4d16-Is-seceding-antiAmerican

I know that in the Internet/cable age, epithets like "traitor" get tossed around like bags of peanuts at a baseball game, but when I say someone who wants to secede from the United States hates America, I'm being absolutely 100% serious. I don't see any other way around that.

I have always seen matters of taxes as ones of policy, and politics as a means of determining at what amount might be appropriate, matters that, in a healthy democracy in a great nation like ours, could be arrived at through politics rather than another Civil War. A good number of people had their issues with Bush, and lost a few times at the ballot box before they finally earned a victory, but they still did it at the ballot box. Despite enormous disagreements, and a belief that the previous Administration was, indeed, infringing on the rights of its citizens, abusing power and wasting away a government surplus on incompetent wars and misplace priorities, yet, they never had a Governor suggest secession. If one had, I imagine we would have heard quite a few accusations of "hating America", and rightly so.

Just as I am right to say, with utmost seriousness, that Rick Perry hates America. He hates our country. Governor Perry is no patriot. Nor is anyone else who winks and flirts with those who want to tear apart our nation. Let's call it what it is.

So why is it the gasbags on cable toss around words like "traitor" and accuse any critic of Bush of being "anti-American", yet wanting to secede is what makes you "cool" in the GOP, but no one will use those words when they're actually applicable?

Is it because everyone knows the GOP is full of it and never takes them serious? Or is it just more of IOKIYAR?

3. If you want to secede you don't want to be part of the USA any longer
Sounds a little anti American even while representing freedom of speech in saying such.

4. Not anti-American. People don't know their own history.
New York and several of the northeastern states only ratified the Constitution when they were assured they could secede if they wished. Without this condition the Constitution never would have been ratified. Lincoln ignored those provisions and kept the union together by force.

5. During the Bush years the desire crossed my mind.
If McCain/Palin were in the WH now I'd be receptive to the idea of secession of all the blue states. Thoughts of emmigration would have been pushed to the forefront as well.

6. It is entirely within the precepts of our founding documents to change
our government, by force of arms if necessary. Those documents do not support secession FROM the nation. That was decided at the cost of 600,000 American lives.

In Ben Franklin's words, if we do not hang together we shall certainly all hang separately.

8. Even so...
...it seems that matter was decided in the Civil War. Even for Texas. The South (including Texas) claimed the right to secede, by arms, and lost. So whatever the founding documents may say, you can't secede any more.

7. I have heard people here say
the Constitution is not a suicide pact.

Not that the Feds would ever give up the income tax dollars from a state wanting to leave the Union, but I would have no problem with it.

We do grant divorces in this country.

Just because someone doesn't want to be an American doesn't make them anti-American.

9. Yes. I mean, that's pretty obvious.
Has this governor actually threatened to do so?

Is he nuts?

It's that simple. They don't want to support the government or the rule of law with anything but lip service. Money? Work? You won't see hide nor hair.

13. What they really want is to secede from reality and live in their own dream world. It' s appealing
to think you can escape from the inevitable difficulties confronted in the real world. THey think if they could have a society of people just like themselves that all their problems would go away. Because the source of their problems is always the other guy.

Frankly, if we could find a place for them I'd be all for the ignorant getting out of the country.

Think about it, we could actually start getting some practical solutions started and begin getting something accomplished: with a more equitable tax code we'd get stronger economic growth, more support of opportunities for education yielding a better educated population, universal health care which would bring down the cost of health care (prevention/intervention of many diseases before they get really expensive to deal with would save billions of dollars.). All these smart, practical objectives are seriously compromised by the Corporate Lobbyist Party's manipulation the pathetically ignorant. And we all end up paying for it.

God, I wish they could secede! They're just dragging us down with them.

16. "if we could find a place for them", can you think of a
better place than texas? Think about it, we could move all the RW crazies into texas and maybe give them OK, NM, AZ, and UT also. Relocate any sane people from those areas (the sane are only there because they can't afford to move) and let them enjoy their own. Then we could get on with creating an America that will prosper in the 21st century. What we have now is destined to fail and a thousand President Obamas can't change that with the RW albatross around America's neck.

The Rethuglicans will not be happy until it is brother at the throat of brother once again.

I would prefer a national divorce. I think we need to dump these troglodytes and leave them to their own devices.

15. SECEDE (def.) = LOST an election to a BLACK man
This line of thinking seems to be the new REPUG thing and I suspect we will be hearing a lot more along these lines ...

After all, G-d promised them a republican in the White House and the American voters were just SO wrong.

Same logic as with the tea bagging: no taxation without representation. Of course, that ignores that people voted and DO have representation.

AARGH!
