The father of Slumdog Millionaire star Rubina Ali has offered his daughter for sale for £200,000.

Rubina, who plays young Latika in the hit film, is nine years old.

http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/271325/Slumdog-Millionaire-star-Rubina-Ali-who-played-Latika-is-offered-for-sale-by-dad-Rafiq-Qureshi-to-the-News-of-the-Worlds-Fake-Sheikh.html

The poverty-stricken father of Slumdog Millionaire child star Rubina Ali plans to become a millionaire himself-by SELLING his nine-year-old daughter.

In a bid to escape India's real-life slums, Rafiq Qureshi put angel-faced darling of the Oscars Rubina up for adoption, demanding millions of rupees worth £200,000.

As he offered the shocking deal to the News of the World's undercover fake sheik this week, Rafiq declared: "I have to consider what's best for me, my family and Rubina's future."

Rafiq tried to blame Hollywood bosses for forcing him to put his daughter up for SALE.

1. Too many reports (and pictures) suggest that these kids were badly exploited by the film.
Shameful if true.

They cannot simply return to their previous lives. The pictures of their return to India show how surreal the situation had become. There are images of the young actor being hit by his father for not going out to perform for gathering crowds.

They should have been paid a fair wage. Fox Searchlight will not discuss numbers when it speaks of payment to the children.

I think we will be boycotting Danny Boyle's films from here on out.

3. It looks like they were smart in providing
for the girl with a trust and it looks like a place to live that is still being built. Her father has spent some of her money already and she has just earned a good bit for doing a commercial. Just that amt is way more than her father earns per year. This looks more like greed on his part.

7. They received very little. The film company will only pay out the trust if the kids remain

in school at 18. Pretty unlikely due to the poverty and struggles they live with. Eating is a more pressing concern. Besides, there should be NO CONDITIONS for the kids to recieve the pay they earned for the work they ALREADY DID.

There was a home promised by the government. It was promised AFTER the media reports started to show this situation in a negative light. Not surprisingly, the talk of said housing stalled promptly around the time that the media began moving on.

The intent of the parents MAY BE greed but it does not negate the fact that these kids were used and mistreated by the people who made this VERY PROFITABLE film. All of the promises and grants are not going to help these tiny children cope or survive, the slum life they were returned to, right now.

Recently the filmmakers offered to donate to the region to help kids in need. Timing is interesting seeing as the "slumdog" kids are coming back into the media light.

These kids are now a GREATER target for those who would exploit children. Their lives were made more difficult and dangerous because of this film.

The movie depicts what sometimes happens to children who have exploitable qualities. These two kids now fall under this heading. How much will the pretty little movie star fetch? The filmakers profited and the kids live under even more dire circumstances. Like i said in my previous post...shameful.

4. would that have even mattered? they SHOULD have been given a fair wage,
but it sounds like this girl's father wants MORE money regardless of how much she got already. it's disgusting, and something ought to be done!! could we let these kids come here and live to be safe from what obviously will be a bad future for them there??

8. Different reports say between $800 and $3000 for a full month of work.
There is talk of a trust. The reports that i could find with info on the trust say that it is only payable if the kids remain in school until 18. This is NOT a fair wage for children who worked for a month on a film that made 100's of millions.

2. So, finally, the difference between Bollywood and Real Life.
Edited on Sat Apr-18-09 11:20 PM by tomreedtoon
If you think our media presents false images and false hopes, take a glance at Bollywood films. India is not only a nation full of poverty and misery, it's even more in denial about poverty and misery than America.

ON EDIT: I was suddenly reminded of the Mexican film Los Olvidados. It was an honest film about the misery in Mexico's slums. It had no happy ending and no cute dancing girls.

6. I think this is a reflection on the father and not the film
Also if she could get adopted by a decent family it might beat her current one with a father like that.
