US Girl Scouts prepare for war, pestilence
(well maybe the Girl Scouts can teach "homeland" and "fema" real citizenship, responsiblity and efficient use of $ and materials!)

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States wants to enlist its 3.4 million Girl Scouts in the effort to combat hurricanes, pandemics, terror attacks and other disasters.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched a campaign Tuesday to entice the blue, brown and green-clad multitudes to be even more prepared, with the promise of a new patch if they pitch in.

The young scouts will be able to emblazon their sashes or vests with the patch if they undergo the training which readies them for an emergency.

"This new preparedness patch will increase citizen preparedness and enhance our country's readiness for disasters," said DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano in a statement.

1. If it weren't for the last 8 years, this story wouldn't have the negative connotations.

But I do sure your skepticism about such programs. Although - If I remember correctly - the boy scouts have been targets of even more direct (sometimes even overt law-enforcement style programs) influence-taking....

2. The DHS should be disbanded
it is a singularly fascist department that does not server We, the People.

And the word 'homeland' continues to creep me out.

12. Some Nazis like Himmler didn't like the League of German Girls

Some of the BDM's work even drew harsh criticism from Nazi party leaders, such as Heinrich Himmler, who felt that these activities were not befitting young girls. Said Himmler in a speech at Bad Toelz: "When I see these girls marching around with their nicely packed backpacks - it's enough to make me sick."

3. As a former Girl Scout leader, I think this is a great idea. I was surprised/appalled at
the number of parents who used the scouts as a free babysitting service, maybe this will help the younger girls become more knowledgeable about what to do in an emergency.

5. I think it's a great idea, as well.
It should be taught to every group possible. Maybe even extra-credit courses in school. How many lives have to be saved or even comforted before this has paid for itself?

13. Agreed
If a disaster hits an area, every pair of hands and feet will count no matter what their age.

8. You DO realize an EDUCATED 10 year old girl
saved countless lives in Indonesia because she KNEW what to look for and informed an adult when the water receded so dramatically don't you?

9. I believe we need to educate kids but not put them on the front lines...
or put that kind of responsibility on their little shoulders.
Why can't we just educate them and let them be kids? Why do they have to serve the homeland security? Its all a lot of nazi bullshit in my opinion...just like Hitler's youth.
If you disagree, please post why it is any different and maybe I will change my mind.

10. It's about inculcating a sense of community and how we all help each other.
Kids LOVE IT when they're given the opportunity to teach what they know. Can I tell you a story?

I began ice skating at the advanced age of 35, inspired by Torville and Dean. I aspired to whatever my body would allow and showed up at 6 am to patch with the girls. A guy from the Disney show passed through one afternoon and taught me to do cartwheels on the ice. I subsequently erraaa... "disturbed" a number of small bones in my foot. OUCH!!! The moment I reappeared in the dressing room, a 7 year-old colleague who had witnessed his tutelage and my injury approached me saying, "I'll show you how to do it right. Don't be afraid." She allowed me time to warm-up, then corrected my technique, forcing me to get back up on that horse. I never hurt myself again. That was my rink rat community.

I was a Brownie, then Girl Scout and LOVED IT. Nature. Safety. Community. Cookies. These are a few of my favorite things...
