This volcano is about more than flights........

While it is early in the morning in Europe the following picture shows the impact of the volcano in Iceland on European air traffic (as of Thursday), if you compare Northern (none) and Southern (60) European flights. The blue crosses are airports. The volcano has already had a stunning impact on Europe, although articles about it are already dropping below the lead headlines.

There is a thought that the plume may last another five days, and even though the cloud is largely invisible to those who are being impacted by it, the damage by neglecting these precautions could be severe. And given that the British election is on May 6th, the impact of a sustained eruption on the debates in the UK, and the result may go beyond just limiting the travel of those who would campaign, to become more dominant with the length of the flight curtailments and the responses to help resolve what are likely to be growing transportation problems.

1. I was reading about Katla last night.
The bigger, more-active volcano than Eyja... They are connected and for the past 1,100 years, an eruption at Eyja... has been followed by a larger eruption from Katla.

3. Volcanic ash relentless as new tremors rock Iceland | Reuters

REYKJAVIK, April 18 (Reuters) – Powerful tremors from an Icelandic volcano that has been a menace for thousands of travellers worldwide rocked the countryside on Sunday as eruptions hurled a steady stream of ash into the sky.

Ash from the volcano drifted southeast towards Europe, sparing the capital Reykjavik and other more populated centres but forcing farmers and their livestock indoors as a blanket of ash fell on the surrounding areas.

Iceland’s Meterological Office said tremors from the volcano had grown more intense and had increased from a day ago, but that the column of steam and ash rising from the volcano had eased back to 4-5 km (2.5-3 miles) from as high as 11 km when it started erupting earlier this week.

“We are seeing mixed signals. There are some hints that the eruption will be decreasing, and others that show it is not decreasing,” Einar Kjartansson, a geophysicist at the Meteorological Office, told Reuters.

Just now I was doing some surveillance on FReeperville and came across two threads next to each other. the first was Freepers stuck in and around Europe. The second was calling Trains "obsolete"...

total disconnect about how Trains can get you there through the ash cloud.

Granted transatlantic service can't be accomplished via a train. but Getting from London to Rome is no problem aside from the crowd of other passengers.

on edit/
THIS HERE, IS AN ARGUMENT FOR AMERICAN BULLET TRAINS. (infrastructure)

11. Calling trains in Europe 'obsolete' is purely ignorant.

met when hitchhiking in Finland a dealer in the grain stock market. She heard that the prices reacted immediately and are rising.

Iceland's volcanos have caused severe famines in these parts of world.
