As the white house has chosen to include ‘employment’ and ‘job creation’ and not Labor, I should not be surprised that this White House chose to support Senator Lincoln in a legitimate primary challenge with a viable candidate, supported by unions, that stood a better chance of winning in a general election against the Republicans this fall.
How many times have progressives been asked to compromise? How often have we been asked to submit an issue in the name of bipartisanship that exists only in the imaginations of the pundit class?
I congratulate the White House on the re-nomination of Senator Lincoln, a politician that turned her back on the majority of the people in her state and the nation at large, as well as the Democratic party, in the quest for campaign contributions that will do nothing to get her elected. I would also like to extend you my sympathies Mr. President, as I doubt Senator Lincoln will be any more loyal or helpful for the progressive causes, the belief in which I feel we share.
I truly wish, Mr. President, that you would realize that this exercise in triangulation is leading us further to the right economically and away from populist Democratic ideals. You are seeking common cause with those who want to tear you from the oval office; who savage your name in the editorials; and whose “two minute hate” against you runs ad infinitum on many radio and television stations 24 hours a day.
For this reason suggest action. I wish you would take the entire slate of confirmable positions and find the most progressive imaginable candidates to fill them. After congress goes to recess use the ability to fill all of these vacancies with recess appointments.
What do you have to lose? Is it likely that the most obstructionist minority party in American history will cause more trouble or stop more legislation and appointments from getting through? This is about sending two messages: “Either act like adults and collaborate in fixing the problems of the great nation or be left out in the cold;” and “The Democratic party has a mandate and it is time the right wing extremists in the Republican party realize that people know longer trust rule by zealots and the super wealthy.”
Whatever you do President Obama, for good or ill, history lays before us and I do not want to imagine you learning, as so many leaders before you have, that there are worse things than being a one term leader.
Thank you and Good Luck!
