Why the last honest Republican (McCain) isn't going anywhere
From The Raw Story, the liberal alternative to Drudge

By Larry Womack
RAW STORY COLUMNIST

When Bush said that “the true nature of John McCain” was “sad” when responding to criticism that Bush’s 2000 New Hampshire primary ads were too negative, John McCain could have split from the Bush Republicans. But he didn’t.

When Karl Rove masterminded a campaign charging that McCain “was mentally unstable, that he received preferential treatment from the Viet Cong when he was a prisoner of war, that he fathered an illegitimate child, and that his wife abused prescription drugs she had stolen from a charity” — all in just one issue of the Dayton Daily News — McCain could have split from the Bush Republicans. But he didn’t.

When the Bush Administration took power like a victorious fascist regime spending money “like a drunken sailor,” McCain could have split from the Bush Republicans. But he didn’t.

And just last week, when House Speaker Dennis Hastert decided McCain (who spent five years as a prisoner of war) needed a lesson in American sacrifice at time of war, McCain could have split from the Bush Republicans. But he didn’t.

So much for McCain the maverick. He may have a reputation for wandering outside the gate, but it’s pretty clear that everyone’s favorite senator is very much broken. It seems he’ll suffer any insult for the sake of the Party.

3. McCain is stuck between a rock and a hard place
He's too conservative to endorse his friend John Kerry.

He disagrees with almost everything Bush does and says but has to support him. McCain's career will be over otherwise. Despite his support, the neo-cons still insult him.

There is little chance of the dominant political party in America self-destructing so we need more people like McCain in there. He actually does what he says he will do. That's why I supported him in 2000. When you have McCain vs. a Democrat, there's no risk of a corrupt neo-con extremist winning the election.

4. But neo cons are scared of him
he can actually talk and think. Two things that elude the shrub.

Plus, he is a populist, with roots that run deep. I like the guy, even if I disagree with many of the policies, especially reproductive. I enjoy his candor. And that is what scares the pants of the shrub-lites. They can't have them both on stage at the same forum. "cause, guess who wins the crowd?
