OK, here’s the deal. I’m tired of op/ed writers writing whatever they want, claiming the moral high ground, and passing their flawed logic off to millions of Americans. These Americans choose to read what these writers say, and because there is a void where a response should be, they believe it. I’m tired of Ann Coulter’s ranting and raving, I’m tired of Bill O’Reilly spinning the No-Spin Zone, and I think it is time we put a stop to it. From now on, every time Coulter puts out a slanderous article, someone needs to be there to go through that junk, and report on the actual facts. Give those millions of Americans who read Coulter for no other reason than there is nothing else. No response. No debate. This name calling isn’t doing either side good. It’s time to show how their arguments are flawed.
So Now They Think He Was Charming
June 9, 2004
http://www.anncoulter.com/I urge you all to go read her article. The only way you can debate and argue against someone is if you know what they said. She starts off today’s op/ed very nicely, praising Reagan, which, as a three-year old when he left office, I had no beef with. The man died from a terrible disease, he was the president of our country, and he deserves our respect. She next goes on to talking about God working through Reagan, which is a religious issue that I don’t feel is necessary in a tribute to Reagan, but oh well. By the way she ended the paragraph; I was astounded by the civility that Ann was showing. Could she actually go through an entire article without saying something negative towards liberals?
Unfortunately, all I had to do was look at the next line, where she takes a seemingly nice piece, and turns it into an ugly political ploy. Liberals, according to Coulter, are not allowed to mourn this man, because they didn’t side with him back in the 80’s. In fact, Liberals were against him, thus, they have no claim to grief. A majority of Americans are not like Ms. Coulter, for those people can feel grief, and sorrow for people across the political aisle. Am I not allowed to grieve for a man who held the highest office in the land, even though I feel he did more to harm our economy than help it? Does my disagreeing with the man’s policies make him any less dead and me any less sad? But that’s not all. Coulter goes on to blast moderate Republicans for not being fond of Reagan….that’s right, I said republicans. Anyone left of her, can’t grieve. Ms. Coulter, don’t think for a second that all Democrats coming out and saying there sad that President Reagan died are using that for a political ploy. On “President” Bush’s website, he has more pictures of Reagan than he does himself. Democrats were disbarred from speaking at the President’s funeral, while it was the who’s who of Republican Leadership slated for speeches. Some of those are the moderates you so alienated.
Moving on, she gives a quote by Reagan in 1964, we shouldn’t take her word that that quote was the only important sound byte in it. Let’s look at that speech. President Reagan says, “Today, 37 cents out of every dollar earned in this country is the tax collector's share, and yet our government continues to spend 17 million dollars a day more than the government takes in. We haven't balanced our budget 28 out of the last 34 years.” Reagan is complaining about too much Government spending. I’m so glad when he came into office, he fixed that problem. Ann uses a quote in her first paragraph from this speech, and while it sounds good where she placed it, I think it is the most damaging when you read it fully. The real quote is, “If we lose freedom here, there's no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.” I think Bush has strayed far, far from Reagan’s freedom’s haven. Reagan wasn’t talking about military matters, he was talking about not using oppressive means to harm your citizens, to protect their rights, and to show to the rest of the world that we protect theirs, which, coincidentally, Bush has done none. Ann uses this speech in her favor, and all it takes to realize how misinterpreted her views are, is to read the speech. Did you know Ronald Reagan said he was a democrat? In 1964, in that same speech, Reagan said, “I have spent…my life as a Democrat.” See, there it is. Folks, don’t just assume everything she says is correct, go out and see for yourselves.
She spends more time harping on Reagan’s good nature Right-wingedness, but, all that good nature didn’t help the majority of people in the U.S. If we had a president who was more conservative than you, but it turned out helped every American achieve a better life, hell, I would vote for him. Reagan indeed cut taxes 25 percent across the board. But, the wealth was not proportional distributed across all Americans. Just because he cut taxes 25 percent, doesn’t mean everyone sees proportional amounts. People under the poverty line don’t make capital gains, thus, why would they benefit from a billion dollars worth of cut backs? Coulter makes claims like this all the time, while correct, don’t convey the meaning that she is trying to impart on you. Question it, and you’ll see she is adjusting her words to fit her argument.
So there we go. This is the first installment of “Slander and Treason: What is really being said” Every time she writes an op/ed, I’ll be there, as I hope more of you will be.
