Enron still merits FERC's attention
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

If President Bush or the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission majority has any thought of protecting the public from market manipulation by Enron and other energy firms, it's time to speak up.

The Snohomish County Public Utility District yesterday released more documents exposing the blatant tricks used in bilking West Coast residents and businesses during the 2000-01 energy crisis. The utility said its analysis of the documents shows Enron gouged $1.1 billion from customers throughout the West.

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., demanded a new investigation by FERC. She said the commission should use its power to void unjust or unreasonable contracts such as a long-term one the PUD canceled with Enron. Incredibly, Enron has sued to enforce the contract.
