Media's reaction to White House comments remains strange (Ivins)
<snip>

— Torture at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere?
1) No worse than fraternity hazing.
2) Just some low-level, white-trash morons.
3) We haven't tortured nearly as many people as Saddam Hussein.
4) Al Qaeda never signed no stinkin' Geneva Conventions, so we have a right to torture them.
5) Shut up, they explained.

— Torture was explicitly authorized at the highest levels of government.
1-5) See above, plus:
6) Did not.
7) So what?
8) "I'm going to say it one more time. The instructions went out to our people to adhere to the law. That ought to comfort you. We're a nation of laws. We adhere to laws. We have laws on the books. You might look at those laws, and that might comfort you."

2. interesting *s use of 'comfort you.'
was in response to a Brit (i think) reporter's question to the effect of 'where could one who doubted the 'trust us' response find some comfort that the * administration had actually taken steps to avoid cruel mistreatment of prisoners.'

Bush was clearly very angry at the guy. It was creepy. behind closed doors, I think he'd be capable of just about anything.

4. Well, we used to be a nation of Laws
Before a Repub Supreme Court selected our Preznit.

And Before Vice president Cheney started giving orders to shoot down passenger planes.

And then there's Asscroft refusing to give Congress the memos.

Und vorher das der reichstag gefeuert war. (Before the Reichstag was burned)

And before the Enabling (USA Patriot) Act was passed.

How's this for Comfort -- the very democratic Weimar Constitution of Germany was still in effect at the end of the Nazis 12-year reign, but it had been suspended leading to a one-party state and a process of Gleichschaltung. If you don't know what that means go read a book on Hitler's Rise to Power. Down With King George and his "long train of abuses"
