Orange County has been called Reagan Country and it's been called Bush Country. But today, it's Clinton who's drawing people out of the woodwork. Book Soup ordered 150 copies for its South Coast Plaza store, the same as for its Los Angeles shop. The big chain stores have ordered hundreds more.
Even Dan Schmenk's 600-square-foot Lido Village Books ordered 40 – about half of which were pre-ordered by customers. "We have Clinton fans, even in Newport Beach," Schmenk said... There are, after all, 424,355 Democrats registered to vote in Orange County.

Despite the stated interests of Rimer and Bolinger, Borders area manager Mike Gibb believes that the Lewinsky affair is key to the public's interest. "Look, 30 (percent) to 40 percent of the '60 Minutes' interview (Sunday) was about that," Gibb said. "Sex sells." For whatever reason, there's no argument that Clinton is hot. Pre-orders put the $35, 900-plus page tome at the top of the Amazon best-seller list. The first printing was for 1.5 million books – already more than 2 million have been ordered by booksellers.

Some people would be just as happy if the book remained sealed in the box. "My instincts are that Bill Clinton is peddling self-serving items here, which were the trademarks of his administration," said county GOP Chairman Scott Baugh. "Self-serving and creating confabulatory memory of what happened is not interesting to me. ... He has charisma and he's intelligent. He's an interesting part of American history, but he's got a credibility problem."
