Bush praises Turkey as Muslim democracy

ANKARA, Turkey-- President Bush today sought to bolster America's partnership with vital ally Turkey, a courtship complicated by terrorists' threats to decapitate three Turks unless the country's companies stop aiding U.S. forces in Iraq.

Bush hoped to use a NATO summit here to nail down details of the alliance's tentative plan to assist with the training of Iraqi security forces. But he also was getting a reminder of widespread opposition in Turkey to the war in Iraq, its southern neighbor. More than 40,000 demonstrators, some chanting "USA get out of the Middle East," gathered in Istanbul to protest his visit.

Bush held up Turkey as a model for the Middle East as he met with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan one day before the summit in Istanbul of the 26-member NATO alliance.

"I appreciate so very much the example your country has set on how to be a Muslim country and at the same time a country which embraces democracy and rule of law and freedom," Bush said.

Turkey's Spokeswoman on why they are banning muslim women from wearing scarves in public: "We do not let them where scarves now, so they can't make us wear scarves in the future."

They are * fav example of an Islamic country because they hate Islam almost as much as he does. They take the steps in their country that our piece of shit president wishes he could take here.

Edit: Spelling

5. That's hardly fair.
Turkey never used chemical weapons against Kurds and is on a democratization process with the supervision of EU.

Turkey had a terrible human rights record, with military coups setting the tone (the last one was 22 years ago), but is pretty much better than Iraq; and getting better at it. So give Turkey a break.

4. And the Turkish President dresses him down
saying Turkey is NOT a Muslim democracy, Turkey is a SECULAR democracy.

Oh man, I really liked him for doing that.
