How Hershey charity director fees rose to half a million

July 20, 2011|By Bob Fernandez, Inquirer Staff Writer

LeRoy S. Zimmerman , who heads the Hershey charitable organization.

When Leroy S. Zimmerman was named in late 2002 to the board of the small state-chartered Pennsylvania bank that managed the assets of the Hershey charity for disadvantaged youth, the post paid about $35,000 a year and came with restrictions.

Governance reforms to take effect the next year would limit Zimmerman, a former attorney general and powerful Republican, to only that one fee-paying board in the Hershey charitable realm. But this would change. In June 2003, Mike Fisher, then the attorney general, ended the one-board limit.

Within four years, Zimmerman had added two additional fee-paying Hershey boards to his portfolio of responsibilities and his compensation soared into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

For the tax year that ended July 31, 2010, Zimmerman, 76, earned $500,000 - for the second consecutive year. His total compensation on Hershey-related boards in less than a decade is $1.9 million.

Words cannot describe this story. Describes Republican Pukes to a tee.......
Selfishness and greed is what this person is all about. Enough is never enough....
In doing more research on this guy, turns out he likes money a lot, and although semi retired, (it looks like) seems to increase his
income from year to year after getting this small deal at Hersheys.

8. Add old and white. I wonder if he is fat, too.
No, please! No pictures, I don't want to disturb my beautiful mind with a sight so ugly...even if he is skinny as a rail, that is a sight too much.

3. It seems what happened is this..this guy could only be on one
Edited on Mon Jul-25-11 11:30 AM by Stuart G
board at a time...in 2002..

so he got 35,000.
After 2003, a buddy of his changed the law, he increased the number of boards, that he was on for
Hershey, and now gets 500,000.(for being on several boards) He is also on the Board of Directors for Hershey Confectionaries... So he parleyed his connections to be on
several boards. up to $500,000..

He is an ex politician..I guess he is currently "retired" on boards..

Here is another story about this guy..who got a special weiver to be on the Hershey Board longer than is their rule.(this happened last year)

5. Oh I agree it's still shady
My point was just that the extra million wasn't coming out of the charity he worked for.

10. Trust is supposed to serve as many needy kids as the funds allow
Edited on Wed Jul-27-11 09:49 AM by JPZenger
Mr. Hershey donated almost his entire fortune 30 years before he died to fund an orphanage. That became the Milton Hershey School, a boarding school for 1800 poor needy kids, whose parents are not able to take care of them. Mr. Hershey ordered the trustees to serve as many kids as the funds allow.

Instead, tens of millions of dollars have been diverted to powerful Republican politicians (such as Zimmerman), for a ridiculous set of new buildings that were closed 2 years after they were built, for buying a failing country club that was used for free by Zimmerman and his buddies, and then building them a new luxury golf clubhouse, for building additions on an old hotel that will never be able to pay for itself but which provides chocolate spa treatments for the wives of boardmembers, etc.

Remember Zimmerman is making half a million a year for PART-TIME work as a boardmember.

Much much more at this link:

Meanwhile, the Attorney General of PA, Tom Corbett, refused repeated pleas for investigations. The Attorney General is the only entity with the legal power to oversee the Trust. He constantly ignored the requests and is now Governor of PA. Guess where Corbett held fundraisers??

12. Here's Zimmerman and his board celebrating spending tens of millions on charity's luxury hotel
Edited on Wed Jul-27-11 12:36 PM by JPZenger

The Milton Hershey School Trust owns HERCO. HERCO owns Hersheypark, the Hershey Lodge, a campground, the Hotel Hershey, etc. For several years, they never returned any money in profits back to the charity. When they finally were pressured to pay a tiny percentage of their revenues back to the charity, they had to borrow the money to do it.

The photo shows Zimmerman, Newels (a powerful Republican who has made over $700,000 from these part-time board positions) and other boardmembers laughing about the tens of millions they spent renovating and expanding Hotel Hershey. The top staff member of the Hershey Trust company wrote in a legal filing that the hotel will never be able to earn enough money to pay for these costs. However, it makes a great place for their spa treatments.

My favorite was when Zimmerman's board announced they were doing an exhaustive nationwide search for a new top staffperson for the Milton Hershey School. Guess who they hired for that very highly paid position? A fellow boardmember.
